Ulster Schools Danske Bank O'Doherty Cup Quarter-Final

St Mary’s, Limavady 3-8 Ballybay CC 1-13

There was real excitement in the Mid Ulster Sports Arena in Cookstown  as St Mary’s, Limavady,  came from nine points down at one stage to snatch victory through a point from Mark Creane in injury-time.

Ballybay CC were the better team, more cohesive in their inter-play, and it was no surprise that they crept into a 1-8 to 0-2 lead after 25 minutes, the goal scored by Simon Brown in the 15th minute.

However Chrissy McKaigue gambled before the break, moving All-star midfielder Callum Brown to full-forward, from where he won a free for Paddy O’Kane to convert and then firing home a goal right on the break, leaving his side just five points in arrears.

On the re-start, Ballybay responded with a point from Colm Lennon and two from Conor McCabe before that was cancelled out by a penalty strike from Sean Butcher after Callum Brown was hauled down.

Ballybay hit back with points from McCabe and Shane Forde, before a second Limavady penalty; same scenario, Brown taken down and Butcher converting.

That gave St Mary’s a bit of momentum and they hit three points in a row to tie the game with two minutes on the clock – just enough time for Creane to snatch a winner.

The winners of tomorrow’s (THURSDAY) remaining quarter-finals will determine next week’s semi-finals. Aquinas Grammar will play the winners from Largy College Clones and St Mary’s Clady (11am in St Paul’s Lurgan), while St Mary’s Limavady will face either Dean Maguirc Carrickmaore or Magh Ene College Bundoran (12pm, Trillick).

St Mary’s : Sean Butcher 2-0 pens., Callum Brown 1-1, Paddy O’Kane 0-3 frees, Anthony McGuinness 0-2, Mark Creane 0-2.

Ballybay: Shane Brown : Conor McCabe 0-6, 0-5 frees, Aaron Mulligan 0-3, Oisin O’Neill 0-2, Colm Lennon 0-1, Shane Forde 0-1.
