Is it possible to live on just $475 a month? Turn on, tune in, drop out. This famous 1960s mantra is credited to Timothy Leary, but there is still some controversy surrounding its origins. Nonetheless, it became the rallying cry for thousands of American youth looking for—what exactly? Freedom. Freedom from the status quo (the establishment) with its rules & regulations, freedom to express themselves in different ways (through music, fashion, and ideology), and freedom to experience new things and places.

I missed the whole Hippy flower-power movement because I was a young nineteen year old Marine Sergeant fighting in Vietnam; after the war I knuckled under to the establishment, the status quo. I played by its rules and lived up to its expectations: husband, father, grandfather, provider, corporate pawn, and professional banker. After almost 50-years enough was enough (really more than enough)—and I quit, both literally and figuratively. At age 64 I turned on, tuned in, and dropped out.

Is it possible to live on just $475 a month while travelling the world full-time? Yes it is. Can anyone do it? Yes again. Is it a lifestyle everyone wants? No, of course it isn’t. I’m almost 70-years old and it’s the lifestyle I choose to live. It requires turning onto a new way of thinking, tuning into your creative spirit & energy, and dropping out of old habits. I’ve lived this way for about 5-years and I’m having a blast. You can do it too. Typically my cost of living averages $350 to $600 per month (lodging, food & transportation) and averages $475 (depending on my location).

I’m a full-time professional travel, wildlife, and nature photographer; I’m a published writer, and a full-time (365-days a year) seasoned world traveller. I’m what fellow travel photographer, Elia Locardi, calls location-independent (meaning that I’m technically homeless), the world is my home and every new person I meet a potential friend; I’m also a slō-traveller meaning I visit fewer places but stay longer in each place, I see less but experience more. My personal mantra which has evolved over time is to: Live simple, Live cheap, Live free (with the emphasis placed on free).
