The vibe: Spearmint zen. Relaxed, yet rejuvenating.
The palette: Light mint green/gray, white, black, gray, warm wood, and a little bit of gold/silver. This paint color (Juniper Breeze by Behr) is one my faves because of its complexity. In this room it reads as a muted, grayish-mint green but in rooms with more sunlight it reads more like mint green.
How this space is me: To be honest, I don’t think I lived up to my decorating potential in this space. I took a little time here (although not nearly as much as with my other rooms) and styled it to flow accordingly, but it feels like it lacks a little something. Or maybe its just because it’s minimally decorated, and is more of a functional space than a decorative space. Nonetheless, it’s my personalized place to get in a good sweat session or chill out with some yoga. I also needed a place to store all my crafts/decor stash, so I let that be the background decor.
For a home gym, it is fairly small. The bedroom is just shy of 8′ x 12′— but is just the right size for a spin bike, some free weights, space for yoga, and a workout bench (hidden in the closet). Clutter is kryptonite for small spaces, so keeping it all tidy with baskets, boxes, and bins was crucial. The organization also lends to that zen vibe here.
I’m sure I’ve raved in past posts about these shelves, but they truly are the best. These are the Expedit (now Kallax) series from IKEA . I’ve purchased ready-to-assemble bookshelves in the past from other stores, and these are hands-down my fave. They are surprisingly strong and solid for particle board furniture. I actually have 4 of these shelves in my home, plus a smaller one with only 2 cubbies.
It’s so awesome to have a spin bike at home–and to not have for something expensive like Peloton. I usually just make up the workout as I go, using my phone and iPod (did that date me?!), but have saved some spin videos to try out later. It’s not going to be same type of vibe like Peloton, but I understand you could pay for their app to get their experience if you liked.
I’ve used better spin bikes at gyms, but this was still a pretty solid buy for only $250. If you’re petite or short-limbed like me, then this is a great bike for your small frame.
Yoga mats and props are neatly corralled into this woven basket in the corner. A wicker laundry hamper would also work well for your yoga accessories or other lightweight workout gear.
The decorative touches are pretty subtle to maintain the relaxed vibe.
This may be the boldest piece of decor in this room, but I couldn’t pass it up. It’s actually a rug that happened to match perfectly with its muted greens and mandala design. I hung it on the wall with thumbtacks.
The bedroom had sliding closet doors that matched the main door. Painting them white was on at the bottom of my to-do list, so I installed a closet rod and added textured linen-like curtains (that also match the window curtains). Procrastinating on the closet doors ended up being a godsend, because I later placed my workout bench here and can access it easily through the curtains. (I later painted the doors and they now look fabulous.)
One more room reveal left and then it’s on to the biggest transformation of my first house: the exterior and yard. Stay tuned!
