*Position Overview:*
The Network Security Engineer is primarily responsible for the University of Kansas network security infrastructure throughout the entire enterprise. This position acts as a liaison between Network Architecture group and Information Security groups within the organization.

As a primary focus, the network security engineer is responsible for design, maintenance, and administration of network security devices and providing top tier support for firewall, VPN, and IDS/IPS infrastructure. In this focus area, the Network Security Engineer will support the IT Security Office and other key University stakeholders.

The position involves leadership for researching, developing, testing, implementing, and staff training for centrally managed network security infrastructure. Position requires well-developed communication skills and the ability to establish personal, positive working relationships with peers, customers, and University Departments.

Position requires participation in an on-call rotation.

*Job Duties: *
30% - Provides configuration and maintenance of network security devices including VPN, firewall, IDS/IPS and Access Control Lists.
20% - Network Security Infrastructure Projects: Works independently and in collaboration with other departments, vendors, management, and Information Services staff to research, analyze, test, and evaluate technical and economic feasibility of network security technologies to meet future network infrastructure and security needs.
Aids in researching and specifying requirements to evolve network infrastructure, manage the network, and protect network assets from security threats. Aids in preparing detailed designs, implementation plans, and recommending new network hardware/software, network management, and security technologies to support the overall goals set by the IT Security Office, Network Architecture, Enterprise Architecture group, and Enterprise Network Planning and Support group.
10% - Works closely with IT staff and University departments to migrate new security infrastructure into production, and to provide training and operational support during transitional periods.
10% - Provides top tier support to diagnose and resolve persistent network security related problems and/or conditions that result in service degradation. Responds on a rotating on call basis to incidents that result in major network infrastructure outages or degradation..
10% - Assists the Network Architecture group with ongoing enterprise network infrastructure projects.
10% - Network Security Administration and Documentation: Maintains documentation related to the KU security related infrastructure, network management systems, procedures, and administrative/status reports. Facilitates and ensures that KU IT network procedures and documentation standards are followed.
5% - Provides training and knowledge related to security infrastructure
5% - Other duties and projects as assigned

*Required Qualifications:*
1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited four year college or university OR a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
2. Two (2) years experience with Enterprise grade firewall infrastructure.
3. One (1) year experience with Unix/Linux based operating systems.
4. Two (2) years experience with network security design, development, installation, configuration, and problem diagnosis

*Preferred Qualifications:*
1. A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline
2. Experience with the following:
· Checkpoint technologies including NGX R7x, Power-1 Appliances, and Provider-1
· Cisco ASA security appliances
· Cisco access control lists
· SSL/IPsec VPN
· Enterprise IDS/IPS
· LAN (layer 2) Network design and management including trunking, VLANs and VTP domains
· WAN (layer 3) Network design and management including BGP and OSPF routing
· OSI model, IPv6, H.323, VoIP, SNMP
· IP addressing, subnets, and Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR)
· Network monitoring tools such as Zenoss, Solarwinds Orion, and Cacti
· Developing and maintaining data network documentation and diagrams
· Network security issues, including Denial Of Service attacks, IP spoofing, port scanning, etc.
· Hands on implementation of security controls for industry regulations such as PCI, HIPAA, FERPA
· Incident response experience in relation to network security
· Strong Linux system administration skills
· Packet capture analysis
3. Preferred Professional Certifications
· CheckPoint CCMA, CCSE, or CCSA Certification
· Other professional certifications, e.g. (CISSP, CISA, CCNA, CCDP, CCSP, etc.)
