The meteoric rise of online learning in the past 20 years has left an indelible impression on all dimensions of higher education, on campus, near campus and at a distance! How we design, develop, and deliver an educational experience has been fundamentally impacted by the application of online learning technologies, and perhaps more importantly, pedagogical practices. The use of online and mobile methods for delivering education has opened new vistas and possibilities not imaginable even 25 years ago. What did we learn from the past 25 years about the power of digital learning as a transformational force in education and what does this portend for the future of teaching and learning?

The Online Learning Consortium (OLC), formerly known as Sloan-C, has both influenced and witnessed this growth and relative maturation of the field over the past 25 years. The adoption rates may have plateaued but the impact is ongoing. Dr. Kathleen Ives has experienced this roller coaster ride as well as student, faculty, and most recently as the CEO of the OLC organization. In this COIL Fischer Speaker Series event, Dr. Ives will share her national and international perspective on the history and promise of online learning.

Kathleen S. Ives, D.M. has worked in online technology for over 20 years and is currently the Online Learning Consortium’s Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director where she oversees the organization’s strategic direction. Additionally, she serves as faculty for the Institute for Emerging Leadership in Online Learning (sponsored by Penn State and OLC), and serves on the EdSurge Advisory Group, the Executive Strategic Council for IMS Global Learning Consortium and on the Leadership Advisory Board for the Center for Learning Innovations & Customized Knowledge Solutions (CLICKS).
