Great news! This new competitive award program will provide grants to selected students with promising research ideas in math and science. Students will be able to submit proposals from September 1 through October 31. You must be a Cogito member to apply.

The Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) and Cogito have established the CTY Cogito Research Awards to enable bright middle- and high-school students to conduct research in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. A committee composed of Johns Hopkins CTY faculty will select students who submit the most compelling, promising research proposals. Up to 10 award winners will be chosen this inaugural year. These students will receive grants to help cover expenses associated with their research projects and will be paired with a mentor to support them through the research process. This program is an important part of Cogito’s mission to foster the development of the world’s most promising young scientists and create a community that includes peers as well as working scientists and mathematicians.

Awards at a Glance

Awards granted will cover costs of doing research.

Amount of awards: up to $600.

Award winners will be paired with a mentor from JHU CTY faculty.

All Cogito members are eligible to apply.*

Winners will be announced on December 31, 2013.

CTY Cogito Award winners will chart the progress of their research on Cogito site.

* Cogito membership is available to all CTY students ages 13 to 18, as well as SET members of all ages. Cogito also accepts nominations for other students from teachers and other educational organizations. Read about that here.  For more information about these awards or if you have questions about Cogito membership, please e-mail cogitocty@jhu.edu.

How to Apply

The application will include summaries of the research idea, how the research will be conducted, the possible real-world impact of the research, and a statement of how the research funds would be spent. A signed parental-consent form, also available for download in the Cogito forums, is required for the application to be considered.

Completed applications must be emailed to cogitocty@jhu.edu by the deadline, 6 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time) on October 31.

Selection Process

CTY Cogito Research Award winners will be selected by a committee composed of Johns Hopkins CTY faculty specializing in various STEM fields. The committee will consider the overall quality and creativity of the proposals, paying particular attention to proposals for projects in their particular field. Selection Committee members may also seek the advice and counsel of JHU faculty from the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, the Hopkins Schools of Medicine and Nursing, the Applied Physics Laboratory, and the Whiting School of Engineering before the final selection.

CTY and Cogito encourage research proposals in a diverse range of subject areas. As a secondary selection criterion, the selection committee may consider the distribution of the awards by subject matter.
