Oct. 20: State Senate candidates forum in Ludlow

Friends of Ludlow Auditorium will sponsor a candidate’s forum at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20 in the Ludlow Town Hall Auditorium at 37 Depot St. in Ludlow.

Candidates for the three Windsor County Senate seats, along with the two candidates for the Rutland-Windsor-2 House seat in Montpelier, have been invited to participate in this forum.

The Senate candidates who have accepted the invitation include: Alison Clarkson (D); Mark Donka, (R); Randy Gray (R); Dick McCormack (D); Alice Nitka (D); and Scott Woodward (I). Also participating are the two candidates for the RW-2 House seat, which includes Ludlow, Mt. Holly, and Shrewsbury: Dennis Devereux (R) and Logan Nicoll (D).

Kevin Kuntz will moderate with Martin Nitka as timekeeper. The forum will open with questions to the panel from the moderator followed by questions from the audience. For information, call 802-228-7239.

Oct 21: EdgarMay Middle School Pool Party



Area middle schoolers enjoy EdgarMay pool party

The EdgarMay is serving up pizza and snacks to students in grades 6, 7, and 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21 for the EdgarMay Middle School Night. Area students are invited for dinner, swimming, and games. The cost to non-members is $5; it’s free for members. The youth membership rate is $13/month.

Oct. 21: Epic Season performs at Grounded4Life

Epic Season of Gorham, N.H., will play indie-alternative rock for the evening in a free event at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21 at Grounded4Life, a coffeehouse in the lower level of the Chester Baptist Church at 162 Main St. in Chester. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with food, coffee, fellowship and conversation.

Influenced by U2, OneRepublic, Coldplay, Paper Route, and classical composers, band members Nathan and Simon Wells, Matthew Crory, and Eli Strahan bring a variety of instruments to the table. Join them for a night of music, hot beverages, and delicious food at the Grounded4Life coffeehouse.

Oct. 22: Saxtons River hosts Chili Cook Off

Join the Village of Saxtons River at Main Street Arts at 35 Main St. in Saxtons River for a Chili Cook Off. Competitors bring a pot of their homemade chili hoping to win the title of Best Chili in Town.

For $5 attendees may taste endless chili samples, corn bread, and vote for the winner. There are hotdogs available for those non-chili eaters. Matt Meserve will provide musical entertainment with special guest Bill Brink.

Oct. 22: Artists chat at River Artisans Coop



Watch artisans demonstrate their craft

The River Artisans Cooperative hosts a “Meet and Chat with the Artists” event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22. Artists will be in the shop at 26B Main St. in Saxtons River creating and demonstrating their crafts from 11 a.m. to noon and 2 to 3 p.m.

Artisans that day include: B.J. Clauson, needle felting; Jennifer Meehl, collaged leaf card design; and Allison Ounanian, hand built clay. There will be an opportunity to talk with the artists and learn about their particular crafts as they work—as well as purchase other crafted items at the shop. Refreshments will be served.

Oct. 22: Local PDs hold Drug Take-Back Day

On Saturday, Oct. 22, the Windsor County Sheriff’s Office, local and state law enforcement agencies, and the Drug Enforcement Administration offer another opportunity to rid homes of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. The Take-Back Day event is free and anonymous, no questions asked, with drop-off sites located throughout Windsor County.

The following locations in Windsor County will serve as drop-off sites from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22: Chester Police Department; Windsor Police Department; Weathersfield Transfer Station operated by the Weathersfield Police Department; Springfield Police Department; Ludlow Police Department; Hartford Police Department; Woodstock Police Department; Royalton Police Department; Royalton State Police Barracks; Norwich Police Department; and Rochester Constable’s Office.

The Take-Back Day and Permanent Collection services are free. Liquids, lotions, powders and patches are accepted in addition to pills and capsules.

At any time, households in Windsor County can use the permanent drop-boxes in the lobbies of the following police departments: Chester, Hartford, Ludlow, Royalton, Springfield, Windsor and Woodstock. For a complete listing of locations and hours of operation, visit: www.twinstatesafemeds.org.

Oct. 22: Trivia night at the Rockingham library

Join friends and neighbors at Rockingham Library’s “Books, Brains & Beer” Trivia Night, which takes place from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 65 Westminster St. in Bellows Falls.

In celebration of Halloween, there will be complimentary sweet and savory snacks, prizes for the best costume and a harvest-themed basket raffle. Enjoy a cash bar provided by Donovan’s. Sign up for a table of up to six people for $75. Or join a pick-up team and register as a single for $15. All proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Rockingham Library. Space is limited. Oct. 22: Springfield Rotary holds Penny Sale

The 64th Annual Springfield Rotary Club Penny Sale is on Saturday, Oct. 22 starting at 6 p.m. at Riverside Middle School at 13 Fairground Road in Springfield. As always, there will be over 300 prizes available with values over $500 and many in the $25 to $50 range.

The culmination of the event is the Grand Prize drawing for $5,000 cash. There will be a $500 Door Prize winner selected from the Grand Prize tickets. Winner must be present at the Penny Sale. Purchase Grand Prize tickets now in advance of the Penny Sale from any Springfield Rotarian.

More than 300 prizes will be available and it still costs just a penny per prize to participate in the Penny Sale. Donate as many pennies as you wish; for each dollar donation you receive 100 chances. All of the money raised at Penny Sale funds community projects and organizations.

Oct 24: Chair Yoga for everyone

No matter what age you are or whatever your disability, you can experience the health benefits of yoga seated in a chair. Jane Worley, an advanced practice registered nurse and yoga teacher, offers four chair yoga sessions on Mondays Oct. 24 through Nov. 14 from 9 to 10 a.m. at Neighborhood Connections at 5700 VT-100 in Londonderry.

This class is appropriate for any skill level and anyone with limitations with ambulation and mobility. This series is offered at no charge. Call 802-824-4343 to register since the class size is limited.

Oct. 24: Advisor talks estate planning

On Monday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m., financial advisor Bill Stevens from Edward Jones offers a presentation on preparing an estate plan in Rockingham Library at 65 Westminster St. in Bellows Falls.

Topics covered will include: what to consider when creating your will; benefits of trusts in estate planning; How to help reduce taxes on your estate; and how insurance can help protect your family. This event is free and open to the public. Sign up is requested for this program.

Oct. 25: Illusionist performs at Rock Library

The Rockingham Free Public Library presents “Mime, Magic And Illusions,” a storytime event at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 65 Westminster St. in Bellows Falls.

Performer Chris ‘Hoopoe’ Yerlig blends pantomime comedy, movement illusions, sleight-of-hand and balloon wizardry to create an original vaudeville show that is full of surprises for families. Audience volunteers are invited to join him on stage to assist with illusions.

Yerlig performs regularly in libraries, children’ ‘s museums and schools, as well as at country fairs, festivals, and corporate events.

Oct. 26: Wildlife biologist to talk on black bears

The Nature Museum at Grafton presents a talk by wildlife biologist Ben Kilham, PhD at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at the NewsBank Conference Center, 352 Main St., in Chester. Highlighted by amazing images, the presentation will focus on how the social behavior of black bears resembles that of humans.

The Nature Museum encourages participation in this program to learn more about an animal that has been spot here in Vermont. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased online at www.nature-museum.org/upcoming-events/2016/10/26/the-social-black-bear. Tickets are also available at the door.
