April 20th, 1894 - Living Sculpture Garden
This usually wasn't Alvin's sort of thing to attend, but he'd needed to get out of the house and had needed to do something with himself. A living sculpture garden sounded like a good way to practice sketching that wasn't brooms, so here he was. It was alright. As an artist, he could appreciate the setup and the detail in the different sculptures and sections. It wasn't a medium he had ever been interested in, not that he could have done it anymore as it was two-handed work, but he thought it intriguing nevertheless. It was the sort of thing Zinnia would have liked, but he hadn't thought it appropriate to invite her to, now that she was married, so he had ventured out alone.
He'd wandered around for more than an hour, through the section with the animals, abstract and Baroque. He'd landed himself in the carved section purely because he could relate to it the most. His own craft included quite a bit of carving and he had once been pretty good at it, working in relief a little bit on custom brooms. Not anymore obviously, but here he was anyway. Some of the sculptures were carved wood, others clay, he had yet to see any bronze, but perhaps that was its own section. He was looking at a piece of carved wood that had hummingbirds and flowers carved into what must have once been a thick tree trunk. If he looked at it for too long he could have sworn they moved. Alvin had to wonder if it was enchanted to do that or if the carving was just that realistic.
Regardless, it made a good subject for some quick sketches. Birds (or any animal really) had never been his forte, so this was a good challenge. Alvin needed something to keep his mind off things lately and some intense sketching would do the trick, if he could manage to stay focused and not let his thoughts wander too far from the present. Without anything to sit on, Alvin arranged himself on the grass, sure that if anyone else wandered through they might find it odd, but the sketchpad and pencils would hopefully give away his activity.
Ironically it didn't take long for someone else to made their way into this section and Alvin looked up, passing the young woman and her chaperone an easy smile before going back to his sketching.
