– Jigsaw have reported a 19% increase in sales for the five weeks to 2 January 2016. Like-for-like sales increased by 12% for the same period. (Source: Retail Gazette)

– John Lewis have reported a 6.9% increase in total sales to £951.3m for the six weeks to 02 January 2016. Like-for-like sales increased by 5.1% while online sales grew by 21.4% for the same period. Fashion, Home and Electricals & Home Technology sales increased by 6.1%, 5.1% and 9.6% respectively, for the same period.

– Majestic Wine have reported a 12% increase in group sales for the 10 weeks to 04 January 2016. Majestic Retail like-for-like and total sales increased by 7.3% and 7.5% respectively, for the same period.

– M&S have reported flat group sales for the 13 weeks to 26 December 2015. Total UK sales decreased by 0.3% while UK like-for-like sales decreased by 2.5% for the same period. Online sales increased by 20.9%.


– Next have reported a 0.4% increase in total sales for the 60 days to 24 December 2015. Retail sales decreased by 0.5%, while directory sales increased by 2.0% for the same period.

– Topps Tiles have reported a 4.4% increase in like-for-like sales for the 13 weeks to 02 January 2016.

– Waitrose have reported a 1.2% increase in total sales (excluding fuel) to £859.8m for the six weeks to 02 January 2016. Like-for-like sales decreased by 1.4% for the same period.

– Waitrose also reported a 2.5% decrease in sales (including petrol) for the week to 02 January 2016.

According to CBRE, planning permission has been granted for a total of almost eight million sq. ft. of new shopping space across London in zones 1 and 2. Almost three million sq. ft. will be within three retail-only developments at Croydon, Westfield London and Brent Cross, accounting for 1.5 million, 698,000 and 592,000 sq. ft. respectively. The remaining five million sq. ft. has been given permission to be built across 30 sites in zones 1 and 2.

According to figures from the Royal Mail’s annual tracker, eight out of ten small to medium sized online retailers are confident to increase sales in 2016, as compared to seven out of ten retailers in 2015. The overall increase in confidence among SME e-retailers comes despite 53% claiming that competition is more intense in 2016 and 45% stating that levels of competition remain unchanged. As per the research SME e-retailers identified new factors for competition in 2016. Some 47% cited the rise of on-the-move smartphone shopping while 44% highlighted price promotions which lead shoppers to seek out the best prices.
