Fort Morgan, CO. 06/09/14 Morgan Community College (MCC) recently hosted a Career Explorations Summer Day Camp at the Fort Morgan campus. Youth, ages 14-18 years old, were invited to learn about many of the employment opportunities in Morgan County, as well as in northern Colorado.
Presenters from companies were invited to MCC to speak to students about their organizations and career options. Another afternoon was spent discussing “soft skills,” correctly completing job applications, and employer expectations. Additionally, participants spent two and a half days touring Fort Morgan area businesses as well as a few in the Loveland area.
“This camp was a great opportunity for students to learn about many different employment opportunities in Colorado and help prepare them for the work force and/or higher education,” noted MCC Director of Guidance and Placement Dan Marler, who is also Chairman of the Eastern Region Youth Council. “It has also been a great way for students to investigate areas of interest and discover employment opportunities of which they were previously unaware.”
Twenty-two youth participated and had signed up through the Workforce Center for the career explorations sessions. The camp was funded through the Colorado Rural Workforce Consortium Youth Council and organized by the Eastern Region Youth Council. Primary organizing participants included Colorado Workforce, Morgan Community College, the Interagency Oversight Group, SB 94, and the School to Work Alliance Project.
Participating businesses were: Cargill, the City of Fort Morgan, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, FMS Bank, Leprino Foods, Media Logic Radio, O’ Sole Mio, SJB Welding and Fabrication, Vestas, Viaero, and Western Sugar. Tours involved the students visiting The Budweiser Event Center, Colorado Plains Medical Center, Colorado State University, Embassy Suites, Erker Grain, Heer Mortuary, Morgan Community College, Morgan County Justice Center, Quail Ridge Dairy, Valley View Villa, Unique Embroidery, and the Wal-Mart Distribution Center.
