What is a credit card bonus offer?
Credit card bonus offers are when the lender offers you a bonus amount of rewards points, cash back, or another reward, when you apply for and are approved for a certain credit card with that lender. You should always check whether the bonus offer is worth it for your rewards style and whether the credit card actually suits your spending habits.
Are credit card bonus offers worth it?
Credit card bonus offers are only worth it if they satisfy the usual criteria for choosing a rewards program:
Are the points going towards a reward you would actually value? Studies show more than 1 in 4 Australians don’t even use the rewards available on their credit cards. There’s no point getting 100,000 bonus frequent flyer rewards points if you don’t see anything on the rewards program website that you think you would like to redeem the points for.
Do the points give you back as much as you have to spend to get them? If you have to spend $500 in the first month of holding the card in order to earn 10,000 rewards points, are the 10,000 points worth more than $500 in value?
Are the points worth the annual fee for the card? Rewards credit cards typically have very high annual fees.
Does this credit card actually suit your spending style? Undisciplined spenders should not sign up for an expensive rewards credit card just for the bonus offer, because rewards credit cards usually have terribly high interest rates and annual fees. No one wants to end up in debt from choosing the wrong card type for their situation.
