The Franconian mechanical engineer Concept Laser has received the IAMA Award 2016 for a 3D printer, which checks the artificial hip joint or the turbine blade for stability. The award was awarded at METAV.

Concept lasers from the Oberfränkischen Lichtenfels took over 15 companies from Germany, Finland, Great Britain, Switzerland, the Netherlands and USA.

The International Additive Manufacturing Award (IAMA) was presented for the second time at the technology and industry fair METAV in Düsseldorf.

“IAMA is the recognition of our hard work, but also an indication that we are on the right path,” said Frank Herzog, Managing Partner and founder of Concept Laser at the award ceremony.

“In this respect, the international 3D award makes us extremely proud and motivates us to continue to inspire the global market with new innovations.”

Sieger system monitors quality even during printing

Finalists of the contest were, besides the prize-winning concept Laser, the company DMG Mori for its hybrid machine Lasertec 65 AM and the Dutch company Additive Industrie for the 3D printer MetalFab1.

The winner’s innovation is a monitoring system that checks the quality of the product during powder-based additive production.

The system measures properties such as the size and intensity of the melt bath heat radiation in ultra-high resolution and correlates the data to the position of the molten bath on the building surface and thus to the component geometry.

This is particularly important for components that are used in areas that are subject to high safety requirements.

For example, the company’s printers produce components for the Airbus A350 made of titanium. Other fields of application include medical technology, the automotive industry, the production of tools and the jewelry industry.

Deviations are determined without destructive analysis procedures

The analysis system makes it possible to determine and evaluate deviations and errors in the component during production. “In this way, downstream test processes can be reduced to a minimum.

This helps save time and money, “emphasizes company boss Herzog. Time-consuming test methods, in which the component has to be destroyed, are thereby largely unnecessary.

This saves costs and time.

Innovations such as those from Concept Laser show that the industry is working intensively on further industrial implementation, “says Dr. Wilfried Schäfer, CEO of the Association of German Machine Tool Manufacturers (VDW) and IAMA initiator.

The international jury assessed the costs, benefits and feasibility of the 16 submitted innovations from companies from six countries.

The panel included industry experts from the fields of industry, research and teaching, the media and industry associations, among them Ken Fouhy, chief editor of VDI.

The applications were assessed, among other things, in the categories of technological innovation, clearly recognizable advantages for industry, the environment and society, cost-efficiency and industrial feasibility.

IAMA for the second time

In February 2015 IAMA was awarded for the first time to the American company Hybrid Manufacturing Technologies. In addition to the IAMA Trophy, the award winner receives a $ 20,000 cash prize and a $ 80,000 media package to market its award-winning technology.
