In today’s time and age wherein the Internet can either be a lifesaver or a disaster-bringer, you need to make sure you know the difference between secure and non-secure logins. This is particularly true when these credentials we are talking about are for your websites and your control panel accounts.

For instance, some logins for your webmail and cPanel are secure, while others are not. When you know how to differentiate the secure ones from those that are not, you can dramatically minimize the risks of unauthorized access and even attacks.

Login cPanel and Webmail Formats

As the experts at cPanel has cited, the following are the formats for both secure and non-secure logins for your web-based emails and cPanel account. The webmails may include Horde, SquirrelMail, or Neomail.

It is critical you always use only the secure login information, especially when you use wireless connections outside of your own secured network.

For cPanel logins, the following are the non-secure ones:

http://yoursite.com/cpanel/

http://yoursite.com:2082/

Secure cPanel login, on the other hand, is:

https://yoursite.com:2083/

For your web-based mail, never use these non-secure logins:

http://yoursite.com/webmail/

http://yoursite.com:2095/

You should only use this secure login for your webmail:

https://yoursite.com:2096/

Logging into cPanel Securely

To make it easier for you to ensure secure cPanel account logins, here’s a more detailed step:

http://www.YOURDOMAIN.COM/securecontrolpanel

When you enter the URL above, just replace the “YOURDOMAIN.COM” part you’re your own website address. This will encrypt your login credentials (both the username and the password), so that no unscrupulous individual can “sniff” or gain access to these sensitive details.

One thing to remember though, is that when you use the link above, you will receive security warnings regarding the certificate’s validity. This will only happen though if you do not make use of your own SSL Certificate your domain comes installed with. You can ignore these warnings. Do not worry: ignoring them will not decrease the level of security you receive during the login procedure.

Logging into Webmail Securely

To make certain you log in to your webmail in a secure manner, you can either use the method above or this one:

https://IP address:2096/

In the “IP address” part, put in your own server’s IP address. You can find this information in the welcome or introductory email you got the first time you signed up with your web host. You can also look for this in your cPanel account. Just go to the stats column located on the platform’s left sidebar.

Another example is to use the following:

https://example.com:2096

Remove the “example.com” part and put in the name of your domain.

Once again, using these secure methods to access your webmails will display several security warnings, but you should just approve them in order to get inside your webmail.

Managing Login SSL Certificates with VPS and Dedicated Hosting

Whether you use VPS or a dedicated hosting service, you still need to securely login to your cPanel, WHM, or web mail accounts. In order to do this, you should have an SSL Certificate.

For the easiest, most convenient way to gain access to an SSL Certificate, you can just purchase one signed by an SSL certificate provider. Best of all, the SSL Certificate you can buy can come with your preferred name.
