The Ocala City Council and the Marion County Commission on Tuesday approved $700,000 in incentives for R+L Carriers Inc., an international transportation and logistics company that promises to create 250 technology and logistics jobs in town over four years paying an average annual wage of $47,700.

In addition to providing the jobs, the company, which is based in Wilmington, Ohio, is expected to invest $2 million in building renovations and $2.4 million in machinery and equipment to support a facility that houses a growing group of high-level technology and logistics management positions. The technology group also will include the expansion of another group that has developed several patents and that will continue to perfect a state-of-the-art wireless image communication, document management, positioning and tracking system.

County Commissioners did not comment on the specifics of the R+L Carriers contract, but lauded the project, as did local business recruiters.

Commission Chairwoman Kathy Bryant said: “It is another great day in Marion County. … We are on our way coming back.”

Commissioner Carl Zalak called it fitting that Roberts would reside in the former Taylor Bean building — a “symbol” of the economic crash that eventually pushed the local unemployment rate to 14 percent.

“This is just another great advancement in telling people we are the logistics hub of the future, and when they come to Florida, Ocala’s the place to stop,” Zalak said. “We are on our way back.”

Although the vote was unanimous at the county, the City Council vote was 4-1, with Councilwoman Suzy Heinbockel voting against the agreement.

Council President Mary Rich asked if the company was bringing people with them.
