Dear Mouthy Housewives,

I need to start exercising. It’s pathetic.

I’ve never been one of those fitness people. But I’m getting older and need to take care of my heart and body. How can I motivate myself to do SOMETHING?

Dear Never Had a Runner’s High,

I'm a little outside my area of expertise. My real gift is motivating people to eat chocolate and lie on the couch more. But l can still help.

I once knew this guy who had no motivation to work out. His wife would “lovingly suggest he take care of himself” by exercising. He may remember this as “nagging incessantly,” but whatever.

A few times a week, he would begrudgingly get on the treadmill and get off once he was sweaty and hot. It was about a three-minute workout routine. Obviously, this wasn’t working.

Well, what this guy really needed was a sport he loved or at least liked. And it turned out to be swimming. He was on the swim team in college, and once he tried getting in the water again, exercising got a whole lot easier. From time to time, he even has one of those mysterious fitness highs.

Even if you can’t think of a sport you love, at least think of one you don’t hate. Maybe it’s walking. Or tennis. Or belly dancing class. Or boot camp. Or spinning. Or that crazy Crossfit insanity. The Bar Method seems popular, but I’m not sure it involves cocktails so please don’t be disappointed.

I’ve heard people love some class called Orange Theory, which sounds like a cross between a juice bar and a clothing store but heck, whatever works.

There is a fitness routine out there for everyone. So go out and find your fitness destiny. And don’t stop until you do. And remember, if you know anyone who needs help eating more chocolate, I’m here for them.

Signed,

Kelcey, TMH
