The Manifesto on How to Be Interesting by Holly Bourne

I’ve read all of Holly’s other books and she’s one of my favourite authors. This is the only one left that I’ve got to read, so I’m going to savour every word; I always find the wait between her books difficult. She’s an incredibly talented author and I know I’ll love this.

This is not about blood or love. This is about treason. Nearly a year has passed since Amani and the rebels won their epic battle at Fahali. Amani has come into both her powers and her reputation as the Blue-Eyed Bandit, and the Rebel Prince’s message has spread across the desert – though some might say out of control.

This YA novel from New York Times bestselling author A. G. Howard marks the beginning of a new era for fans of the Splintered series. Rune Germain moves to a boarding school outside of Paris, only to discover that at this opera-house-turned-music-conservatory, phantoms really do exist.

RoseBlood by A.G. Howard

I’ve been a devoted fan of A.G. Howard since I first set eyes on Splintered, and went on to totally devour the series. Not only are they without a doubt the most beautiful books I’ve ever owned, but it’s a brilliantly dark and twisted look at Wonderland – almost like a sequel to the originals – but better. Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland always fell flat for me, but Howard’s is everything I wanted from the world down the rabbit hole. That’s why her new release RoseBlood is so exciting for me, because she does ‘retellings’ so well.

Fifteen-year-old Grace is funny and plain-spoken. Just because she has Asperger’s doesn’t mean she’s great at maths (she’s not) or can draw the Eiffel Tower from memory (she can’t). Like any teenager, Grace just wants to fit in, so when it turns out that the cutest boy in school likes her, she finds herself falling in with the cool crowd.

The State of Grace by Rachael Lucas

The State of Grace is Lucas’s debut and, having followed her online for a long time, I’ve been lucky enough to watch the book on its journey to publication. Our protagonist Grace has Asperger’s, and she has pretty much everything she needs; until something turns her world upside down, things at home are changing, and the world becomes a lot more confusing. I’ve been excited about it since its announcement, and I have a feeling this is going to be worth the wait – though I’d rather have it now, of course!

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

2017 is the year I will read this. It’s been on my “To Be Read” pile for a while now and I really, REALLY want to read this… Set in Ancient Greece, we follow Patroclus, a young prince who was exiled to the court of King Peleus and his son, Achilles. Achilles is perfect, while Patroclus feels awkward. But the two become friends and, as the two grow into young men who are skilled in combat, their friendship grows into something deeper. So many people I know have read this and loved this, and I’m curious if I will love this book in the same way…

The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon

During the first round of the Zoella Book Club earlier this year, I was introduced to Nicola Yoon’s Everything, Everything. I can remember sitting down with that book at ten o’clock in the evening and reading through to the early hours of the morning, finishing it all in one sitting. I was so blown away by the story that I knew I would have to read whatever book she published next. The Sun Is Also a Star was released not too long ago but I haven’t gotten around to buying it yet, so I’m going to make time for it in 2017.

We are in something of a quiet golden age for light, fun contemporary reads. Perhaps the one book of this kind I’m most looking forward to is mother-daughter duo Perdita and Honor Cargill’s sequel to the hilarious Waiting For Callback. The first book was an utterly gorgeous read which stands out because of the brilliant dialogue, while Elektra is a fantastic main character. Having raced through book one, laughing constantly, I can’t wait to see what she does next in this sequel!

Amy Alward has the ability to suck you into Sam’s world of magic and mayhem so beautifully that I know I won’t be able to put this book down. It’s always been difficult for me to find a book that really makes me laugh but these books have had me in fits of laughter every few pages and I’m sure the 3rd will not disappoint. But I just have one burning question – will Sam ever get to go on her date with Zain?!

The moment I heard there was to be a YA superhero series I set my sights on Wonder Woman. The amount of figurines, graphic novels and general WW fangirling I have in my home is testament to my love for this character, and I think she’s in safe hands with Bardugo. I know the character pretty well, and have read a number of back stories and origins, but most of them skip over the teen years so I think this could slip nicely in between (not that we can’t have ANOTHER alternate timeline!)

Her other books are so realistic and true to life, which I find really refreshing. This is an older book that I am determined to make time for in 2017. We Have Always Lived in the Castle has been on my to-read list for a long time, but two things happened this year to make it move to the top. Firstly, I heard that this Shirley Jackson classic is being made into a film starring one of my favourite actors, Sebastian Stan. I love it when a book is made into a film as it reaches more people and I’m an avid cinema-goer, but I like to have read the book first. This book also played a part in Jennifer Niven’s Holding Up the Universe, which was another sign that I needed to read it soon.
