Snowball fights, snow angels, and building snowmen are great for the kids, but what if you want a little more adventure? As we get older we start finding new winter hobbies that give us the chance to move around, travel, and most importantly, explore. Whether it’s ice fishing or snowmobiling, if you’re looking for a new adventure, we’ve found the perfect destinations for every winter sportsman.

Where: Sugarloaf Mountain Resort – Carrabassett Valley, Maine

Why we love it: It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or a veteran, Sugarloaf Mountain Resort has around 90k trails that will fit your skill set. The resort is pretty quiet, which means there’s hardly any running into cross country skiers. One of the best features of the mountain is obviously the scenery. Whether it’s the snow covered trees or the random deer, you’ll be able to soak up a gorgeous view that will give you amazing memories.

Activity: Snowmobiling

Where: Fort Peck Reservoir – Fort Peck, Montana

Why we love it: Ice fishing is a personal, intimate hobby, which is why we think Fort Peck is the perfect place to enjoy it. It’s a long way from everywhere, but getting there helps you start relaxing. It is considered to be one of the best multi-species lakes in the United States, containing trophy-sized fish. While there are other lakes that are good for individual freshwater species, this is the lake you want to go to for a variety.

Activity: Skiing

Where: Jackson Hole Mountain Resort – Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Why we love it: If you want a skiing experience that contains amazing powder without the hassle of lines lasting for hours, Jackson Hole is right for you. As one of Wyoming’s hidden gems that is mostly observed in the summer, skiing is becoming more and more prominent each year. Jackson Hole’s tram is one of the finest ski lifts at any resort, scaling 4,139 feet in 9 minutes – all while carrying 100 passengers! It’s continuously growing, and gives you a smooth run every lift.

Activity: Snowboarding

Where: Mammoth Mountain – California

Why we love it: You’d think as far as resorts go, skiing and snowboarding would go hand-in-hand, however, that’s definitely not the case. Mammoth is one of the biggest resorts in America, with over 150 trails. No matter what your ability, there’s plenty to do on the 3,500 acres that will improve your confidence and progress. This is the perfect place for snowboarders because it provides a variety of terrain from trees to open bowls. It’s also relatively easy to navigate around once you get your bearings.

Why we love it: Every climber knows that every climb is different, which is why Ouray Ice Park is the perfect place to go. Ouray Ice Park gives you access to more than 200 named climbs, all free and open to the public. You’ll have great views, great climbs, and great adventures. No matter what level you are, you’ll find a great climbing area for you. But beginners, make sure you hire a guide to show you the ropes.

Activity: Cross Country Skiing

Where: Mount Bachelor Nordic Center – Bend, Oregon

Why we love it: Cross country skiing isn’t the easiest sport, but when you find the right resort, it doesn’t even matter. Mount Bachelor gives you 35 miles of Nordic trails that weave through Deschutes National Forest. It’s full of easy loops for beginners, as well as double diamonds with 600-foot elevation gains for experts. The perfectly groomed trails give you the chance to explore until you’re ready to put your skis away.

Activity: Sledding / Tubing

Where: Avalanche Tubing Park – Valley Hi, Ohio

Why we love it: Sledding is fun for the whole family, and it’s even more fun when it’s extreme. Inside the Mad River Mountain complex there’s a place built for sledding called Avalanche Tubing Park. This groomed tubing hill has 10 rolling lanes that carry tubers for up to 1000 feet. Don’t worry though, you don’t have to walk up to the top. The park is complete with full service tubing with “magic carpet” conveyor lifts. And, if you want a change of pace, they also have “Midnight Madness,” which is cold, but worth it. If you’ve ever wanted to go to Ohio, this is the perfect reason.

Activity: Winter Camping in a Yurt

Where: Cumbres Nordic Adventures –  New Mexico

Why we love it: Camping in the winter may not be ideal for everyone, however, when you stay in a yurt, you’re basically staying in a warm home. The Cumbres Nordic Adventures in New Mexico are exactly what you want for winter camping. Might we recommend the Spruce Hole Yurt to have the Rio Grande National Forest right outside your door. Here you’ll be able to enjoy all the winter activities we’ve already listed, all while sleeping in a cozy yurt complete with everything you need.
