What Is Residual Income?
Residual income is a payment received on a continuous basis, month-after-month, and year-after-year…from something you do only one-time.
In contrast, an override commission is a one-time payment only. There are no ongoing payments from a customer coming back and consuming month-after-month, and year-after-year.
As a network marketer you earn over-ride commissions when someone within your downline organization:
Makes a sale
Enrolls a new member
Makes a one-time sale from a customer who never reorders
These are all one-time payments that do not create passive residual income streams.
The reason why it’s tough for network marketers to create long-term passive residual income is because the majority of people quit within the first 30, 60, or 90 days. And when they quit, they stop ordering products.

Unfortunately, in the MLM industry, it’s all about the “numbers”. And this is where the failure occurs. This is where the 80/20 rule affect the “numbers” in a negative way.
It doesn’t make a difference whether you’re a network marketer with AdvoCare, Mary Kay, Morinda, Nature’s Sunshine, or OrganoGold. If 80% of your downline quit and are no longer ordering products, you can’t earn long-term passive residual income.
If 80% of your organization are doing very little to no work, then they aren’t getting a monthly check. And if they are not getting a monthly check, they can’t afford to purchase over-priced monthly products or since there is no incentive to make a monthly purchase.
So even though they are on the books, they are inactive distributors and contributing zero in the monthly income reports.
The 80%’s are going to quit in almost every MLM business and when they quit they become inactive. They often time move on the next glorified MLM opportunity where they believe that they will have a better chance of earning long-term passive residual income.
So Who Are The 80%’s?
The 80%’s are common every day, good natured people such as your mother, your sister, your friend, your next door neighbor, or the average person you meet that doesn’t have any sales experience, that doesn’t have a lot of drive and motivation to take action and that hates rejection when asking other people to join an opportunity.
And when the 80%’s fail to make money in their first 30, 60, or 90 days, they quit. And when they quit, they stop ordering because they aren’t making any money or they aren’t saving substantially on product purchases as customers for them to continue reordering every month.
And this is why the failure rate is so high in the MLM industry because there is no long-term residual income.
The 20%’s are the ones ordering the products in order to stay qualified to earn commissions and override bonuses.
So the secret to success is being able to find a business model or a solution where the 80%’s can make money and where they have an incentive in purchasing products and services. Otherwise, it’s not going to work.

There are 6 major roadblocks that you will undoubtedly face as a network marketer.
Roadblock #1. In general, you must work like a carpet saleman to move your products and services. You have to deal with lots of rejections which can be discouraging in the long run. This can be a turnoff that lead many people in the network marketing industry to eventually quit. And in some cases, they may join other MLM companies that they perceive as having an easier or better marketing approach to earning long-term passive residual income.

Roadblock #6. You have to deal with complicated compensation plans. For example, two (2) popular plans include 1) the stairstep breakaway plan and 2) The binary plan
The stairstep breakaway plan is a complicated plan that is hard to explain. It focuses on building sales leaders and teams. It also generally requires high personal purchase volume requirement and a large investment in products.
The binary plan is where you get to build two legs in your business. You don’t get paid on both of your downlines, but instead you are paid on the sales and growth of the leg with less sales volume.

These types of compensation plans will cause many marketers to quit within 30, 60, or 90 days from my experience.
If a company can’t retain its existing members by employing lots of limiting and restrictive barriers, it become a challenge to retain new people they recruit for long-term success.
Here’s the simple truth of the matter.
80% of the people in your downline organization is going to quit in the first 30, 60, or 90 days because they won’t earn a monthly paycheck.
The benefit of staying in these networks (no matter how great the products.) won’t outweigh the pain of having to purchase additional required, often times, very expensive monthly products.
This is especially the case since the main reason that people join these networks in the first palce is their desire to earn a monthly paycheck.
It becomes a negative driving force to remain a member after spending an extra $200 to $500 on products after several monthly of being in the business without an offsetting paycheck.
And by the way, this doesn’t include all of the time you have to invest and the marketing expenses you will incur in doing home meetings, purchasing marketing materials, spending money on gasoline for travel to meet with prospects, and other hidden or unexpected expenses in promoting the business to others.
The answer is very simple. The owners of these companies only care about themselves and lining their pocketbook with millions and millions of dollars. They could care less whether the average marketer builds long-term success or not. It’s all about recruiting a high number of new members for short term gains.
Unfortunately, this type of greed is counter intuitive to the long-term success of a business. It would be logical to get a new customer and find as many ways as possible to keep that customer happy for a lifetime.
It’s much more cost effective and financially rewarding to market your business to an existing customers than trying to recruit a new customer to market to.
If you cater to your existing customers and continue to provide them great value, they will continue to purchase your products and services month-after-month and year-after-year.
