Today, we're taking the beta tag off Compose PostgreSQL – it has passed all our criteria to become a fully-supported database offering, and will be taking its place alongside MongoDB, Elasticsearch and Redis.
We launched the beta version of PostgreSQL on the Compose platform in January of this year. It was an exciting moment for Compose as this was the first SQL database we were going to offer. Before that point we had only offered NoSQL database technology. Not that we were strangers to PostgreSQL – we have used it internally for some time.
PostgreSQL was a special case too - while most NoSQL databases had their own high availability (HA) software baked in, PostgreSQL needed it added. After looking at the various offerings, Compose's own Chris Winslett created Governor, a lightweight HA solution for PostgreSQL in cloud environments. Governor was so cool that after we explained what it did, we had to share it. In March, we open sourced Governor and others have picked up its code and ideas and built their production platforms around it.
For Compose users, there's no building to be done because Compose PostgreSQL comes ready assembled for speedy deployments you can rely on. Each deployment is a two-node HA cluster of databases with automatic scaling for resources and an automated backup system you can rely on.
During the beta, which clocked up nearly seventeen thousand days of customer-run deployments, we also looked for what customers needed. Over the months, we added PL/Perl to give more linguistic flexibility and PostGIS to give a better sense of geography. We also built a data-browser for PostgreSQL into our web dashboard to make life even simpler and PostgreSQL didn't miss out when we gave our databases more scaling controls. All the while, we've also been fine tuning Compose PostgreSQL to give the optimal performance.
And now we're ready to say the beta is over and you can get our production-ready PostgreSQL deployments at the click of a button.
