What is circadian rhythm?

Your circadian rhythm is your body’s internal “biological clock”. Operating on a roughly 24-hour cycle (+/- 16mins in healthy adults), it governs our sleep-wake cycle and plays a large part in everything from hormone release to body temperature. Circadian rhythms are not exclusive to humans and are found in nearly every living creature, from nearly every animal and plant to various micro organisms. Our circadian rhythms are regulated by a cluster of nerve cells in the hypothalamus known as the suprachiasmatic nucleus. This “master biological clock” of cells responds to, among other cues, light (from tightly connected “iPRG” cells in our eye’s retinas) and, depending on how much or little is received, triggers such sleep-centric events as the release of melatonin. In normal healthy subjects this “clock” is reset, primarily by exposure to light (in particular “blue sky” 460-485NM wavelength light) so that it follows the 24-hour light/dark cycle of the Earth’s rotation.

What types of solutions does Lighting Science make?

Lighting Science was the first pure-play LED company established in 1988. Since then we have gone on to design and produce hundreds of LED lighting solutions addressing consumer, commercial and industrial markets. Lighting Science sells more than 1 million lights a month. However, the company’s passion has evolved along with the science, and as we have learned about the positive and negative effects of light, Lighting Science has made its primary mission to create energy efficient lighting solutions that also contain health and wellness benefits for users.

Can you describe the science behind the light bulbs?

Lighting Science has invented LED solutions capable of emitting light across specific spectra, each eliciting a specific biological response. This technology is already being deployed in the company’s Sleepy Baby®, GoodNight®, and GoodDay™ solutions, as well as its Genesis dynamic spectrum platform. Studies have repeatedly shown that light in the 460-485nm, often referred to as “blue light”, inhibits the release of melatonin and that over-exposure to blue light within 90 minutes of bedtime can disrupt sleep patterns.

Conversely, exposure to blue light at appropriate times increases alertness and productivity, enhances mood, controls glucose levels, boosts metabolism, and promotes restorative sleep at night. We now know that traditional incandescent as well as fluorescent light bulbs (and modern electronics and TVs btw) provide us with insufficient blue light during the day and too much of it at night. The result is disrupted sleep patterns and increased fatigue, as well as rising instances of metabolic and hormonal diseases. The Sleepy Baby®, GoodNight®, and GoodDay™ lights are each designed to emit the appropriate amount of blue light at various times of the day. The Genesis dynamic spectrum platform that combines these spectra along with air quality sensing into the ultimate HealthE™ lighting solution for both home and business environments. The technology disclosed in Lighting Science’s newly issued patents will continue to be deployed in future Lighting Science solutions to deliver to consumers the ability to adjust light output as appropriate, much the way light switch dimmers currently adjust for brightness. In addition, these new solutions will come in a wide variety of LED form factors.

What is the difference between the HealthE™ series and other lights on the market?

While other lights on the market primarily use only correlated color temperature (aka CCT) to control mood, Lighting Science uses patented spectrum-control technology to keep color (i.e. pleasant white light) consistent, while modulating spectrum (invisible to the human eye) to boost mood, increase productivity, cognitive function, and improve memory retention, while increasing the body’s ability to heal itself and sleep better. The real benefits come from the science of light, and that is what Lighting Science is all about.

Back to top of page

How do the GoodDay™ lights make you feel?

What isn’t well known is the light we use to illuminate our offices and house can affect both your mood and immune system. Think of our GoodDay™ lights as “natural daylight”, suffusing working and living environments with a similar spectrum of light to that produced by the sun. As with the sunshine, this light stimulates the release of both serotonin cognitive activity (promoting energetic feeling).

Back to top of page

How does the GoodNight® lights make you feel?

The GoodNight® helps prepare your body and brain for sleep. Even with the warm white glow, the lack of blue light tells your body it’s time to start producing melatonin, the hormone that helps us sleep.

Back to top of page

How do the Sleepy Baby® lights make you feel?

The Sleepy Baby® has a warm yellow glow that works great as a night light for putting little ones to bed, and helps babies get on a natural circadian rhythm. Critically, the bulb emits almost no blue light, so late night feedings and diaper changes can happen with less disruption (Note please never use traditional lights at night for feedings or diaper changes), allowing everyone to fall back asleep fast.

Back to top of page

Is the technology patented?

In 2015 alone Lighting Science received 35 new patents from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), increasing their portfolio of issued patents to 366. These new patents – covering the fields of biologically adjusted and corrected lighting, light spectrum control, micro-electric optics, and advances in roadway infrastructure and other lighting fixtures – demonstrate Lighting Science’s leading role in developing and bringing to market HealthE™ lighting solutions using biologically adjusted and biologically corrected spectra designed to improve human health and productivity.  Lighting Science also received patents for inventions that will deliver key advancements in the field of medical care. These patents related to the phototherapy treatment of various medical conditions, including diabetes, obesity and various vision-related maladies. Unlike other existing phototherapy technology, which is unable to tailor the light treatment to a specific patient, Lighting Science’s newly patented technology uses light both to emit an output spectra designed to diagnose the patient, and then to tailor a responsive therapeutic output spectra to treat the patient’s diagnosed condition in a single cost effective treatment application. What is the ideal placement of HealthE lights in my home?

GoodNight® lights are ideal for your bedroom (especially your bedside table) and bathroom as well as any room where you spend time within 90 minutes of bedtime. Sleepy Baby® lights are great for nurseries and for children’s rooms that use night lights (and can certainly be used by adults too). It’s beneficial to have both, so that neither the parent nor child are “triggered” by artificial light which tells their body clocks it is time to wake up and prevents them from falling back to sleep swiftly. GoodDay™ lights are great in bathrooms to get an extra boost as you get ready in the morning, for desks and in the home and office spaces where people do work, in the kitchen where many people congregate, or in the bedroom in dedicated “wakeup” lamps, so that when you flick the lights on in the morning the room floods with the spectrum of the sun and you are ready to go.  And with the new Genesis DynaSpectrum™ lamp series, you can have all of these “lights” in one lamp!

Back to top of page

How can the GoodDay™ technology help my workplace environment?

Most businesses don’t take into account when creating workspaces. Few are aware of the profound effects it can have on not only people’s moods, but also their energy and focus levels. While blasting holes in the walls to install more windows is probably not an option for most business, you can mimic natural sunlight and combat those midday blues with our GoodDay™ solutions. Our GoodDay™ solutions solutions emit a focus enhancing blue spectrum to boost your body’s natural alertness and elicit the secretion of the mood elevator serotonin.

Back to top of page

How long does it take for me to feel an effect from the lights?

With the GoodDay™ lights the effects can be felt almost immediately. With the GoodNight® and Sleepy Baby® lights because there is no visual difference – you are still able to conduct evening activities and chores with the light output it provides –  it works behind the scenes. The lack of blue light spectrum tells your brain and body that the sun has set, and the primordial clock – or circadian clock – begins to release melatonin and other hormones that ease us to sleep and help us heal and rejuvenate us while asleep.

Back to top of page

Is being under GoodDay™ lights too long dangerous?

The GoodDay™ light gives off no UV rays–it’s not harmful! The increased blue spectrum (while providing a soft white glow) encourages cognitive functioning and positive effects such as energy and focus, mimicking those of direct sunlight. Normally we are exposed to sunlight from 10-12 hours a day. However, if you are pulling an all-nighter, then the GoodDay™ light can help you stay alert, just as a cup of coffee might, but without the crash. There is no harm in extended exposure to the light, but we encourage users to combine usage with the GoodNight® lights to maintain a healthy circadian rhythm.

Back to top of page

What happens if GoodDay™ and standard lights are used at the same time?

Again the more exposure and proximity you have to the GoodDay™ light the stronger the effects are going to be. While many environments may have multiple sources of light, from LED track lighting, to sunlit windows, to fluorescents – the GoodDay™ lights are going to give you the most consistent and positive effect on mood, energy and cognitive functioning.

Back to top of page

What happens if GoodNight and standard bulbs are used at the same time?

The melatonin-inducing effects of the GoodNight® lights are maximized when they are the only lights in the room. Anytime you pick up and stare into your iPhone or iPad, or flip on a standard bedside table lamp, you are exposing yourself to a spectrum of light that should only be experienced during the day. This can in certain doses confuse your circadian rhythm and tricks your brain into thinking it should be awake. The less exposure you have to this type of light the better.

Back to top of page

What if I use GoodDay™ lights at home but then have standard lights in my office?

GoodDay™ effects are based on exposure. While the positive effect on cognitive function may linger, you need to be exposed directly to the light to reap the benefits. So while the GoodDay™ lights are a great way to start your day and train your circadian rhythm– flipping them on in your bathroom, bedroom or kitchen can really give you an early morning charge – standard office lighting with little exposure to direct sunlight, will erode these effects.

Back to top of page

How long do these lights last?

On average these lights last up to 20 years, and use 70-80% less energy as a regular incandescent light.

Back to top of page

When should I turn off My GoodDay light?

Ideally 3+ hours before bed you should switch from GoodDay™ to GoodNight® lights.

What is the difference between CCT and spectrum?

White light from an ordinary bulb actually is a blend of three primary colors – red, blue, and green. Often, however, the light skews very subtly toward one of these shades. Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) indicates the particular color, measuring it in Kelvin (K) degrees. (Not to be confused with the more commonly-used Celsius scale.) Warm, red-skewing light, for example, corresponds to a CCT of K2500. Whereas a cooler blue will be in the neighborhood of K6500. Yes, the higher the Kelvin, the cooler the hue.  The importance to our eyes is these temperatures can be the difference between a color appearing vibrant or dull.

Spectrum, on the other hand, refers to the distribution of wavelengths emitted by a light source. Each wavelength corresponds to a particular color of light. Green light, for instance, has a wavelength of 495-570 nanometers. Just in case you don’t know what a nanometer is, it’s microscopically small. In effect, these wavelengths determine the amount of each color permeating a given space.  According to Lighting Research Center, color is a human perception constructed from the combination of the spectral power distribution (SPD) of the light source and, so, full spectrum light sources, which are the most like natural light, allow us to render color really well.

You won’t notice spectrum colors radiating from an ordinary bulb. They’re invisible, detectable only as wavelengths. But your body will notice them. Which does make the color spectrum much more important than the much subtler CCT when it comes to biological functioning.

How should HealthE™ lighting solutions be applied in a college classroom and dorm?

Universities need engaged, hard-working students. But people make mistakes, especially when they are tired and we are all getting less sleep than ever.  Circadian rhythms lead university students to stay up late studying and socializing in their dorm rooms, but feel groggy in the morning due to poor sleep quality (and short duration).  The light students are exposed to indoors during the day does not have enough blue wavelength content whereas the light has too much exposure for nighttime studying and socializing.  Exposure to light with enhanced blue spectrum (especially in the morning) will create a circadian shift that will help students focus better during the day and get to sleep earlier in the evening.

GoodDay™ lighting solutions promotes focus and alertness while maintaining crisp white light using Lighting Science’s proprietary spectrum control technology. Our GoodDay™ BRs, T8 linears and troffers are the only human health lighting solutions that give users more energy and enhance student focus.  These solutions should be installed in classrooms and study areas so students and teacher performance can be improved.

GoodNight® lighting solutions emit a beautiful white light with a pre-sleep spectrum, filtering out the blue wavelengths of light, which inhibit the release of melatonin, a hormone critical for healthy, restorative sleep. Reduced-blue spectrum with bright, warm light enables proper circadian functioning, healthy and productive nighttime study.  GoodNight™ lights should be installed in bedrooms, especially in bedside lamps, as well as other lighting fixtures in student rooms.

Some school buildings are occupied throughout the day and into the night, but do not have circadian phase-appropriate light creating health concerns and lower productivity occupants Dynamic Spectrum lighting creates a spectrum that evolves over the course of the day, in sync with occupant’s circadian rhythms, enabling optimized health and performance.  Our Dynamic Spectrum integrated in downlight, sconce, and hanging pendant form factors emit a biologically-correct spectrum of light no matter what time of day, shifting in accordance with students’ natural rhythms.  Genesis Lights for desks in study rooms to enable students to be exposed to a biologically-correct spectrum of light for studying at any time of day or night.
