Far removed from joints and bongs, marijuana smoking methods have truly entered the high-tech age. Beginning with tabletop devices like Storz and Bickel’s revolutionary Volcano vaporizer, the market has seen a greater demand for more portable, high-end devices that seem to have more in common with mobile phone technology than their paper and pipe ancestors.

Among the best of the new devices is the PAX. The original, released in 2012, quickly set itself apart from its competition. While devices like the Magic-Flight Launch Box, the Arizer Solo and the WISPR developed technology that allowed consumers to vaporize marijuana on the go, they didn’t offer the same discreet and attractive packaging as the PAX.

Now onto its second iteration, the PAX has become much smaller than the original. Its premium materials include a thin film heating element and a stainless steel oven, which is separated from the vapor path. The majority of the other materials are high-grade, food-safe plastics wrapped in an anodized aluminium shell and powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The device itself is assembled in China, but the whole process is overseen from the company headquarters in San Francisco to ensure that each PAX is built to their original design specifications.

While the vaporizer maintains a sleek look and features only one button and four indicator lights, it’s anything but simple. The button is used to turn the device on and off, and allows users to switch between its three temperature settings. The PAX also houses an accelerometer, which detects motion and shifts to standby mode when not in use; this allows the element to stay hot when you’re in the middle of a session, and to save battery life when you’ve set it down. The long battery life means you get about five sessions before the PAX needs to be recharged.

The accelerometer also grants users access to the device’s hidden features, which include the ability to shift the colour of the lights while you draw, along with interactive games like Simon. These Easter eggs have been important in giving the the PAX a personality that is decidedly lacking in the competition.

Being feature-rich is just the icing on the cake. Like many other devices on the market, the real goal for PAX designers was to provide a safer, healthier way to smoke. Because the herb you place in the conduction oven never reaches combustion, users will only ingest the active components of the vapor like THC and CBD. They won’t consume any of the particulate or tar that comes with analogue modes of consumption.

Safety, discretion and design have all played a part in making PAX the device of choice for many consumers. Sure, there are a handful of top tier vaporizers, including Storz and Bickle’s own Crafty and Mighty, but they don’t offer the same discreet package that the PAX does.

It’s pretty easy to understand why the PAX has risen to the top of the pile for vaporizers and continues to dominate the conversation. It’s a versatile device that can be used at home or taken along for a night on the town. It has style points, but doesn’t draw attention to itself. Most importantly, it delivers high quality vapor sessions with your favourite strains.
