Here at ABODO, our favorite section of the Sunday New York Times is obviously Real Estate. (Although the copywriters are particularly fond of the Book Review.) And our favorite recurring column is What You Get for…, which highlights three properties in different parts of the country, all of which cost the same amount.
That amount is typically in the millions, or at least the high six figures, which makes the column a fun glimpse into how the other half lives. But it’s not often all that helpful to a potential renter.
That’s why we’ve created our own spin on the idea. Each month, we’ll highlight nine rentals across the country, priced reasonably at around $1,000. Big places, small places, places with pools — in big cities and college towns; on the east coast, the west coast, and everywhere in between.
So sit back, relax, and try to keep your apartment envy in check.
1. NASHVILLE, TN
WHAT: A three-bedroom 1,000-square-foot apartment in northern Nashville that comes with free access to a pool, 24-hour fitness center, and a park for your pets, plus a balcony that overlooks the complex’s expansive lawn.
HOW MUCH: $1,036 per month.
SIZE: 3 BR, 1 BA
SETTING: Located in Nashville’s Poplar Glen neighborhood, the Point Breeze apartment complex is in a highly residential area with a grocery store, high school, and shopping center nearby. It’s just a 10-minute drive from downtown Nashville and just 5 minutes from notoriously hip Five Points, which is the heart of the East Nashville neighborhood.
2. DENVER, CO
WHAT: A recently renovated one-bedroom apartment in downtown Denver. The Route 40 apartments, at 450–500 square feet, come with granite countertops, large windows, and hardwood floors, plus parking, laundry, and storage available for an added fee. The larger units have added closet space.
HOW MUCH: $950–$1,295 per month.
SIZE: 1 BR, 1 BA
SETTING: This apartment is in a sweet spot of downtown Denver: The Denver Art Museum, Colorado State Capitol, Denver Zoo, and Denver Botanic Gardens (inside gorgeous Cheeseman Park) are all less than a mile away. And the University of Colorado Denver is just a 2-mile trip. At the corner of Downing and Colfax, restaurants, bars, theaters, and shops are just outside. This is, however, a quieter side of downtown Denver. Closer to the campus is where you’ll find the skyscrapers of the Central Business District.
3. BLOOMINGTON, IN
WHAT: The Mediterranean-lifestyle-inspired apartments at Scholar’s Rooftop range from 620 to 710 square feet. The units themselves sport smart details, like wrought-iron fixtures, stainless steel appliances, and arched openings. Water and internet are free, and there’s a washer and dryer in every unit. From the outside, the building looks like a motel, with external stairs, walkways, and entrances to each unit. But the icing on the cake for botanophiles is the raised-bed gardens on the rooftop patio.
HOW MUCH: $995–$1,070 per month.
SIZE: 1 BR, 1 BA
SETTING: The Scholar’s Rooftop apartments are on Bloomington’s north side, about a mile from the heart of the city and even closer to Indiana University — perfect for the college-bound Hoosier. It’s in a fairly residential neighborhood, with a mix of single-family homes and apartment complexes, but still has easy access to grocery stores, delicious restaurants, and retailers.
4. LOS ANGELES, CA
WHAT: A studio apartment with recently installed hardwood floors, freshly painted walls, and new coin-op laundry on-site. Because it is a studio, square footage is a bit limited, but there is a spacious closet, kitchen, and bathroom.
HOW MUCH: $1,050 per month.
SIZE: Studio, 1 BA
SETTING: Located in the southwest quadrant of the 10 and 110 interchange, three miles from the heart of downtown, these studio units are in LA’s University Park neighborhood, near the Los Angeles Technical College, Mount Saint Mary’s University, and the University of Southern California. This makes for a diverse and youthful neighborhood that contains more historic and cultural monuments than almost any other area of LA.
5. COLUMBUS, OH
WHAT: An expansive second-floor apartment in a fully renovated historic carriagehouse, which you can still detect in the exposed brick and tall sloping ceilings throughout. This apartment is on the higher end for rent in Columbus, but its 949 square feet make up for the price tag. Plus, there are large windows, a walk-in bedroom closet, off-street parking, and a washer and dryer.
HOW MUCH: $1,100 per month.
SIZE: 1 BR, 1 BA
SETTING: Near downtown, this upper unit is across the street from Columbus’ Topiary Park, which holds shrubbery sculpted into human, animal, and other shapes, plus a koi pond and live music events. It’s also within walking distance of Franklin University and the Columbus State Community College.
6. ATLANTA, GA
WHAT: A City Plaza apartment in downtown Atlanta that ranges from 707 to 777 square feet, completely decked out with the perks of luxury living. Aside from the hardwood floors, stainless steel appliances, in-unit laundry, and balcony — which are notable in themselves — the building also houses several retail shops, such as a dry cleaner and grocer. The City Plaza Courtyard also acts like a private park for renters, with a fire pit and patio tables.
HOW MUCH: $960–$1,060 per month.
SIZE: 1 BR, 1 BA
SETTING: On the next block over from the City Plaza Apartments is the Atlanta City Hall, and just a block farther is the Georgia State Capitol and accompanying Liberty Plaza. And it’s just blocks from Georgia State University. Located right downtown, you’re in the middle of everything Atlanta has to offer, including the Georgia Aquarium and the Georgia Dome, where both the Falcons and the Georgia State Panthers play.
7. PROVIDENCE, RI
WHAT: A 627-square-foot apartment with water, heat, and electricity included. Also onsite: parking and shared laundry facilities.
HOW MUCH: $1,025 per month.
SIZE: 1 BR, 1 BA
SETTING: Providence is a relatively small city of less than 200,000, but it’s part of a much larger metro area that tops out at more than 1.5 million — mostly in the tiny state of Rhode Island — which makes for a lot of dense housing. This apartment is located in the College Hill neighborhood, which is where you’ll find Brown University, many of its students, and Brown Stadium. Historically, College Hill was also the first permanent colonial settlement in the state.
8. MILWAUKEE, WI
WHAT: A one-bedroom apartment in the Yankee Hill neighborhood of Milwaukee, in an updated retro-style building. Heat is included, and there are also on-site options for laundry and parking. These Lexington Apartments also come with an air conditioner unit and dishwasher.
HOW MUCH: $1,095 per month.
SIZE: 1 BR, 1 BA
SETTING: The Yankee Hill area is within East Town neighborhood, just south of the Lower East Side. Very close to downtown, the area around the Lexington Apartments is extremely walkable, with a grocery store nearby as well as Cathedral Square — a community park that hosts live music and festivals, ringed by bars and restaurants. It’s also just blocks away from one of Milwaukee’s defining features: Lake Michigan, which has a lakefront dotted with parks and trails.
9. RAPID CITY, SD
WHAT: A 844-square-foot house, complete with a yard, front porch, and garage. Coming in under our $1,000 budget, this house has wood floors, freshly painted walls — in blue, red, green, gray, and more — and updated finishes, such as ceiling fans and bathroom cabinets.
HOW MUCH: $900 per month.
SIZE: 2 BR, 1 BA
SETTING: Rapid City is South Dakota’s second-largest city and a common stop for those making a trip out West to visit Badlands National Park and Mount Rushmore National Memorial. This house is a little outside of Rapid City’s downtown area, and the area between is 3 miles of parks — Founders Park, Skyline Wilderness Area Park, and Dinosaur Park. Although it’s a fairly small city of about 70,000, it still offers hip local restaurants and breweries.
