I have 2 pilots that are almost 12 months old... they still only fly frigs and destroyers but damn they fly them well 
This has to be my most focussed pilots - skill plan says she'll be level V in everything trained so far... in a year and a half. Given that I created her in Feb 2009 that's a lot of time (I took over 18 months inactive account though) and that she still needs to learn Black Ops and Command Ships plus their ancillary skills I'm looking at closer to 2 more years until she finishes sub-caps. Maybe a little more because I should really train into the extra armor skills (but I never fly armor).
But you know? I love that she kicks arse in everything she flies
She and my other 2 mains all have over 6 years invested in them - more for the (subcap) pvp pilot that flies all 4 races.
It's never to late to start I guess, I have fun on my baby alts and industrialists too, especially in channel with others
