“I had a wonderful time studying at Nottingham and it has prepared me extremely well for my career in science and cutting edge technology” – Paula Clerkin, Graduate Computer Scientist, Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL)

The University of Nottingham provides a modern and exciting location in which students are able to study and undertake reserach, combining cutting-edge facilities with a central location. The University’s Computer Science building on the Jubilee Campus is a short bus ride away from the historic city centre. Nottingham is proud to offer students a friendly environment in which to study, promoting open and honest relationships between staff and students. International students are welcome at Nottingham, with other cultures and countries celebrated on an annual basis – such as the Chinese New Year meal and numerous summer barbecues.

Ranked with the best

The School of Computer Science is ranked among the top U.K. Computer Science departments and was voted the best School within the University for both 2014 and 2015. Students are supported and nurtured during their time at Nottingham, and this is reflected in the University’s outstanding graduate results. The School offers specialist modules and exciting undergraduate teaching modules. In fact, Nottingham was ranked among the top 10 U.K. academic institutions as part of the latest Research Excellence Framework in 2014.

A computer science degree from The University of Nottingham will enable students not only to understand and program today’s computer technology, but also to design and create the systems of the future. All courses are designed to be compliant with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). The School provides outstanding teaching, and a well-equipped and structured learning environment. Hands-on programming sessions, computer-aided learning tools, web-based seminar materials and small-group tutorials support and complement traditional lecture courses.

Easy transition from study to career

Nottingham also offers its students excellent connections with employers, including Adobe Systems, BT, Google, IBM and Microsoft – students can choose to undertake a year in industry or a summer work placement.

Students also have the opportunity to complete research in a variety of areas including artificial intelligence, cloud computing, data mining, modern optimisation, simulation and modelling, and ubiquitous computation and networked infrastructure. In 2014 alone, 96 percent of first-degree graduates from the School of Computer Science who were available for employment had secured work or further study within six months of graduation.

Comprehensive education with a forward-looking outlook

Undergraduates can choose to complete a Computer Science BSc with a year in industry. On this programme, students are introduced to the key concepts and tools underpinning modern computer science. Students will develop their skills and learn how to program in C, Java and Haskell, in addition to studying the architecture and applications of computer systems.

Nottingham also offers postgraduate students a challenging range of in-depth course options, such as MSc Computer Science and MSc Human Computer Interaction. Students will gain theoretical grounding, practical knowledge and hands on experience of key skills and competences needed to shape computing systems for the 21st century, as well as being at the forefront of research in their fields.
