We are the only hospital in western North Dakota to earn four stars on Hospital Compare’s overall rating and to receive The Leapfrog Group’s highest Hospital Safety Score in the state. Why? We provide the best care for our patients. As the only faith-based provider in the area, we’re committed to continuing this tradition of caring.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently released Hospital Compare where CHI St. Alexius Health Bismarck received a four of five star rating. Hospital Compare has information about the quality of care at more than 4,000 Medicare-certified hospitals across the country.

According to CHI St. Alexius Health Bismarck Medical Center President Kurt Schley, his organization is proud of the quality care it provides. “Being the only hospital in Bismarck to earn four of five stars is a big achievement. It is a reflection on Catholic Health Initiative’s commitment to providing the highest overall quality care, treatment outcomes and performance.”

“We encourage patients and their families to examine our quality results so they are better informed when it comes to making decisions about where to get their healthcare,” said Rosanne Schmidt, vice president and chief nursing officer at CHI St. Alexius Health Bismarck. “By publicly displaying each hospital's quality data, it also encourages hospitals to improve the quality of care they provide.”

The Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating combines 64 measures that are already public on Hospital Compare into one star rating. The measures fall into seven groups: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care and efficient use of medical imaging.

The Leapfrog Group’s latest Hospital Safety Scores awarded CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck an “A” grade for safety, making them the only hospital in central and western North Dakota to receive an “A.”

“We are proud to receive an ‘A’ grade in safety from The Leapfrog Group,” said Kurt Schley, president of CHI St. Alexius Health Bismarck. “This is a tribute to our physicians, nurses and entire clinical and non-clinical associates for their hard work and dedication to position our hospital as a leading, trusted provider of care for the patients we have the privilege to serve.”

According to Rosanne Schmidt, vice president and chief nursing officer, this is a wonderful achievement for CHI St. Alexius Health Bismarck. “Everyone in our organization is focused on achieving the highest quality standards of care to ensure the safety and well-being of our patients.”

For its latest scores, the Leapfrog Group assigned "A" to "F" letter grades to hospitals based on 28 performance measures using data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the American Hospital Association's annual survey, CDC, CMS, and the Leapfrog Hospital Survey. Taken together, they produce a single score representing a hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors.

According to an analysis of the Leapfrog data conducted by Matt Austin and Jordan Derk of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine's Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality, patients at hospitals that received an "A" grade faced a lower risk of avoidable death than those at other hospitals.
