The Urban Studies Program at the University of Washington, Tacoma (UWT) invites applications for a full-time, tenured professor and Director of Urban Studies to begin July 1, 2013. The program seeks an exceptional scholar, teacher, and administrator in the field of Urban Studies. A Ph.D. is required in Urban Studies or related field, although disciplinary and research specializations are open. Applicants must be qualified for appointment at the rank of full professor.
The Director will serve as the academic and administrative head of the Urban Studies Program, one of seven degree-granting academic units currently at UWT. The Director also serves as part of the academic leadership of the campus. The program currently employs eight faculty members across all ranks, enrolls 90 undergraduates in its two B.A. programs (Urban Studies and Sustainable Urban Development), and offers a Certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The unit usually employs between 1-2 FTE Lecturers and is supported by 1-2 FTE administrators and staff. Urban Studies has a well-established community advisory board and, like the campus overall, is strongly supported by the community. While the faculty members have diverse research interests and disciplinary backgrounds, they share a common commitment to local and global social justice and community engagement. The Urban Studies Program is a high functioning academic unit with a strong culture of collaboration and consensus-based decision-making.
We seek candidates who have
� A record of innovative and influential urban-related scholarship, able to be appointed with the rank of Professor at UWT;
� Sufficient administrative experience, interpersonal and organizational skills to succeed in leading and advancing an interdisciplinary academic unit;
� Enthusiasm for the campus�s mission of education to a diverse student body;
� Attitudes and experiences that foster collaboration, experimentation, and linkages outside the individual academic unit and outside the university into broader, diverse communities (both local and global).
� Familiarity with major themes and issues in North American urban studies as related to an urban serving program.
� Successful experience with community engagement and with fundraising/grant-writing.

The new Director will work with the faculty in deciding upon and designing future recruitment, curricular and research plans within an academic culture of collaborative governance.
