General description of position: Applications are invited for a
post-doctoral level position to join the Chini Physics Education
Research Group at the University of Central Florida. Our research
group explores the implementation of evidence-based teaching practices
at diverse institutions and with a variety of student populations.
Current projects include 1) exploring differences in the success of
studio-mode instruction across institutions and 2) investigating the
experiences of students with executive function disorders in active
learning physics and chemistry courses and improving those experiences
through instructor training on Universal Design for Learning. The
Chini group includes three graduate and three undergraduate students;
the UCF PER group includes a second tenure-track faculty member. More

is an initial 12-month appointment, with potential renewal for a
second year. The successful candidate will participate in extensive
personalized professional mentoring as part of UCF’s Preeminent
Postdoctoral Program. Professional development activities may include
training on and participation in grant writing, training in mentoring
and scaffolded mentoring of students, participation in the STEM
Education Reading Group, and participation in the UCF iSTEM Faculty
Fellows program (for disciplinary faculty working on education
projects).
Job description: The successful candidate will collaborate on existing
projects and have some freedom to lead new research directions. Duties
will include qualitative and/or quantitative data collection and
analysis, preparing manuscripts for physics and STEM education
journals, presenting at related conferences, and supporting graduate
and undergraduate physics education researchers. Opportunities to
teach are likely available if desired.
The candidate is expected to start by June 30, 2017. The salary is
$50,000 plus benefits.
Required minimum qualifications: Ph.D. in Physics, Physics Education
Research, or a closely related field by June 30, 2017; familiarity
with discipline-based education research methodologies; a demonstrated
ability to collaborate with others and work independently.
Preferred qualifications: Demonstrated experience with one or more of
the following: using qualitative and/or quantitative research methods;
analyzing qualitative and/or quantitative data; instrument development
and assessment; developing interview protocols; strong oral and
written communication skills.
