The Coastal Zone Engineering and Management Cluster is part of an exciting new initiative, undertaken as part of SUNY 2020, to hire 100 faculty members over the next five years to expand teaching and research in emerging fields of study that cut across traditional boundaries of academic disciplines. These interdisciplinary faculty cluster hires are aimed at addressing society's most vexing challenges that require a broad understanding of ocean processes and human interaction with the sea. Special emphasis would be directed towards the important societal issues of the region, such as transportation, offshore renewable energy, water quality, and our ability to monitor and simulate the ocean�s properties and functioning as well as the consequential societal choices. The positions are designated for faculty members whose research and teaching interests are interdisciplinary. The goals of this initiative are to strategically place Stony Brook University on the emerging frontiers of research and knowledge and to enhance our ability to shape new fields of discovery, learning and engagement.
Stony Brook University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the area of Civil Engineering, with a specialization in ports and harbors. Candidates are expected to have expertise in one or more aspects related to the design and operation of ports and harbors, including navigation, waterways and hydrography; security, resilience and sustainability; port and harbor infrastructure; and/or environmental remediation and ecosystem restoration.
Required Qualifications: Doctoral degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline with a coastal emphasis. Research experience in waterways, ports and harbors, resilient infrastructure, coastal and/or environmental remediation or ecosystem restoration. Demonstrated outstanding research strength; a strong disciplinary background; and strong experimental and/or theoretical skills.
Preferred Qualifications: Professional Engineer. Publication record in civil engineering ports and harbors. Graduate and/or undergraduate teaching. Research experience in ports and harbors. Professional experience on the U.S. East Coast. A professional engineer's license, or the potential to obtain one.
This position is part of an interdisciplinary faculty cluster aimed at addressing some of society's most vexing challenges in the coastal zone through collaboration of natural scientists, social scientists and engineers. Successful candidates would be expected to develop an independent, internationally recognized research program, supervise student research and teach courses related to their field.
