The Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management is accepting applications for the position of the David J. Nolan Director and Professor of Applied Economics and Management. The Director will have an extraordinary opportunity to lead this internationally recognized School, known for its unique combination of research, education, extension and outreach that inform and foster the public stewardship and private management of businesses, organizations, livelihoods, and natural resources.
The Dyson School is distinguished by its top-ten-ranked AACSB-accredited undergraduate business program, its top-ten-ranked graduate program in applied economics, and its distinguished faculty who are recognized global leaders in their academic fields. Uniquely situated within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the continued success of the Dyson School depends on the synergy of its diverse program areas: food and agricultural economics, management, environmental and resource economics, and international and development economics.
The Dyson School has 50 faculty members and more than 50 professional and administrative staff. It is one of the largest academic units at Cornell University and provides undergraduate education to 700 majors and graduate education to 100 masters of science and doctoral students. In addition, the School educates a wide range of stakeholders through its extension and outreach activities.
The Dyson School is housed in historic Warren Hall which is currently being remodeled as a LEED-certified state-of-the-art building with new classrooms and study areas for students as well as completely renovated faculty and staff offices.
Qualifications: The Director must have a distinguished record of scholarship, strong leadership skills, demonstrated administrative ability, a dynamic management style, the capacity to integrate diverse interests and forge a common vision, and enthusiasm to match the energy of highly motivated students, faculty members, staff professionals, and accomplished alumni from around the globe. The Director is expected to be an economist with a Ph.D. in the field of economics or applied economics, public policy, or management, and to be qualified to hold a tenured academic position at Cornell University at the full professor level.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Director will be responsible for the overall leadership and administration of the School. The Director will oversee and collaborate with the administrative core, including the Director of Undergraduate Studies, the Director of Graduate Studies, the Director of Extension, and an executive committee with representative heads of the four intellectual foundations of the School. This team will lead strategic planning and implement a well-defined and clearly articulated vision, reflecting a cohesive portfolio of academic programs, fiscal and operations/facilities management, personnel, and external relations. The Director will serve as the principal voice in faculty governance and faculty and staff performance evaluation. The Director will provide fiscal oversight for the School, including responsibility for disbursing proceeds from the endowment. The Director is expected to foster collaborative engagements with CALS career services, alumni and development efforts, corporate and foundation relations, and communications/marketing initiatives, and to provide leadership in other areas such as space and facilities planning and allocation. Further, the Director must foster strong ties with external clientele affiliated with each of the Dyson School’s four key areas of food and agricultural economics, management, environmental and resource economics, and international and development economics.
The Director reports to the Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University, and will work with other academic units to coordinate and ensure the success of management, economics, agriculture, and public policy oriented programs across the campus.
The Director’s administrative responsibilities extend throughout the calendar year. The academic appointment as Professor is a nine-month position. The Director normally serves a negotiated (3 or 5 year) renewable term. Upon completion of the Directorship, the successful candidate is expected to remain on the faculty of the Dyson School.
