The Colgate University Libraries seek a collaborative, experienced,
forward-thinking leader as Associate University Librarian. Reporting
to the University Librarian and serving on the senior management team,
the Associate University Librarian assists the University Librarian
with overall administration of the libraries particularly insuring
that plans for the libraries’ strategic initiatives are communicated
to all library stakeholders and are well planned, implemented, and
assessed. Additionally, this position provides leadership, vision, and
management for two important areas: (1) develop and sustain the
Colgate Libraries’ staff and faculty library professional development
program and (2) lead efforts to design systematic and sustainable
approaches to scholarly communications outreach, manage the Digital
Commons Repository, and design new services that support the broadest
possible dissemination of scholarly output. Supports the University
Librarian in vetting and advancing new ideas, initiatives, and
strategic plans and fostering a culture of collaboration and
communication.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Support for Libraries Leadership and Administration (25%)

* Work closely with the University Librarian to develop and
implement the libraries’ vision and goals and communicating these
to faculty, college administration, students, staff, community
members, and donors.

* Assume operational responsibilities of the University Librarian in
her absence.

* Work collaboratively with University Librarian, department heads,
and other library personnel to plan, develop, and implement new
services, initiatives, and projects

* Serve on the University Librarian’s senior management team and
participate in strategic planning.

* Participate in grant-writing initiatives.

* Participate in committee assignments within the Library, on
campus, and in professional associations (local, regional, and/or
national)

Library Staff and Faculty Professional Development (25%)

Working closely with the University Librarian, provide leadership,
vision, and management to develop and sustain the job-related
continuing education of employees in the libraries.

* Maintain and share with library staff and faculty a current
awareness of national trends and developments by participating in
appropriate conferences, workshops, activities, and scholarly
research pertaining to library staff and faculty professional
development.

* Coordinate in-house professional development opportunities for
librarians and library staff on a range of topics.

* Activities that may be included are certification and licensure;
competencies; conferences, workshops, meetings; continuing
education; diversity in the workplace; mentoring; management and
supervision; on the job training; and recruitment and retention.

Scholarly Communications (20%)

Provide leadership, vision, and management of the Libraries scholarly
communication program

* Advise and educate the campus community on issues related to
scholarly publishing, including author rights, open access (OA)
publishing, open educational resources (OER), and current and
emerging publishing trends especially within the context of the
university’s institutional repository managed by the libraries

* Oversee the Libraries’ role in the life cycle of scholarship from
acquiring, describing, and creating it to discovery, delivery, and
preservation and work collaboratively with department heads to
identify and implement the strategic directions for library
departments directly engaged in this enterprise.

* Oversee development of and administer Colgate’s institutional
repository, including copyright permissions, metadata creation,
and uploading of content created by students, faculty, and other
university employees

* Maintain and share with library staff and faculty a current
awareness of national trends and developments by participating in
appropriate conferences, workshops, activities, and scholarly
research pertaining to the evolving publishing landscape and
scholarly communication trends

Research and Instruction Support: (20%)

Serve as liaison librarian to one or more departments

* Engage faculty and students in dialogue about disciplinary
research practices and curricular information needs, as well as
best practices in developing information literacy among students

* Participate in library collection management and assessment
activities, in order to develop collections that meet current and
future user needs

* Seek opportunities to collaborate and establish partnerships in
order to support student success

Provide general reference service and individual research
consultations by appointment across all disciplines for the Colgate
University community as well as members of the general public. Weekly
shift plus 1-2 Sunday afternoon/evenings/semester.

Design and implement strategic and pedagogically appropriate
instruction for library users through a variety of methods

* Apply knowledge of learning theory, instructional design, and
assessment practices to deliver effective instructional
experiences for students

* Engage faculty in planning, developing, and assessing information
literacy instruction

* Practice reflective teaching through use of instructional
improvement tools (such as peer evaluation)

* Develop web-based guides, tutorials, or other instructional
resources

In addition to specific jobs responsibilities, all library faculty
(10%):

1. Participate in the faculty liaison program in order to promote
and sustain a cooperative and consultative relationship between
the library and academic departments.

2. Work cooperatively and in partnership with the Head of Collection
Development and faculty in assigned departments to develop and
manage the collection.

3. Participate in library faculty governance.

4. Participate in University governance and/or serves the University
in other ways as appropriate.

5. Demonstrate an active commitment to the library profession as
described in the Library Faculty Handbook.

QUALIFICATIONS

It is expected that all Colgate University Libraries faculty and staff
members will demonstrate exceptional workplace behaviors in the
execution of their specific position responsibilities. These are:

REQUIRED

* Master's Degree from an ALA-accredited library school or program.

* Five years of progressively responsible experience in library
management and public services.

* Two years of direct supervision of support staff and/or
librarians.

* Strong organizational skills and written and oral communication
skills

* Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic
environment

* Strong service orientation with the ability to interact positively
with students, faculty, and the public.

PREFERRED

* Demonstrated understanding of library staff and faculty
professional development

* Experience working with scholarly communications responsibilities,
including knowledge of open access issues, library publishing,
author rights and copyright, and institutional repositories.

* Experience with bepress Digital Commons publishing platform.

* Experience with information literacy instruction, including
creation and assessment of student learning goals and active
learning lesson design.

* Reference desk experience.

* Experience working in an academic library.
