This position provides forward-thinking,
collaborative, and results-oriented leadership for the Colgate University
Libraries (CUL) through planning and implementation of new technology and the
management and support of library legacy technologies involving information
systems and digital infrastructure and programs.  Reporting to the University Librarian, this
individual serves on the Libraries’ senior management team and participates in
the development and implementation of a shared vision for CUL’s future that
supports the mission of the university.
Using highly effective communication and interpersonal skills, this
individual will respond to the changing information needs of the Colgate
community by participating in system-wide planning, policy development, and
resource and personnel management and build and
sustain effective working relationships within the Libraries and across and
beyond the Colgate community.

Primary duties include:

1.
Serve as the senior advisor to the University
Librarian on all library digital content management systems and repositories
and the creation, maintenance and storage of digital objects for research and
learning, insuring a robust technical infrastructure to support digital
scholarship and scholarly publishing;

2.
Lead in the development and implementation of
an evolving vision for the Libraries online presence and digital services and
applications that promote and extend the Libraries’ influence beyond the
physical building;

3.
Lead, manage, and plan for the Libraries
Systems unit;

4.
Lead collaborative work with a cross section
of library staff - particularly the Systems Librarian and in the Special
Collections and University Archives and in the Cataloging and Metadata units -
to enhance and coordinate processes for library technologies, core digital
systems, services, projects, storage, and content discovery;

5.
Lead and advise in utilizing a standard
project management process and tools to insure greater efficiency and
effectiveness in achieving established goals and objectives within existing
resources.

6.
Develop long-term policies and practices for
digital projects and institutional repository programs;

7.
Serve as the Libraries liaison to staff in
Information Technology Services to insure successful integration and
utilization of university technology in the Libraries;

8.
Represent the Libraries in digital
collaborations on campus and in consortia such as ConnectNY, the NY Six Liberal
Arts Consortium, the CLRC, and the Oberlin Group.

Essential
Functions (may include, but not limited to the following):

9.
Supervise, evaluate and provide backup for the
Systems Librarian to oversee, develop and support the integrated library system
(Innovative Interfaces) particularly its interface with the Dematic ASRS.

10.
Oversee and monitor budget for technology and
digital initiatives.

11.
Oversee and advise use of standard project
management processes and tools for major technology and data-gathering projects
in the Libraries.

12.
Work closely with the Head of Special
Collections and University Archivist and the Head of Cataloging to plan
services and standards for digital project and repository projects and prepare
related workflow, long-term preservation and perpetual access documentation and
procedures.

13.
Chair the Digital Projects Committee to
evaluate, select, implement and assess new products and initiatives and to
monitor how well we sustain on-going projects and programs.

14.
Oversee the development of Libraries
information technology policies and procedures along with service level
agreements with university ITS and outside vendors that establish and/or
maintain an optimal standard of service for CUL operations.  Coordinate related communication, e.g.
Innovative Interfaces, Inc., OCLC, Dematic ASRS, Lyrasis, Internet Archive,
etc.

15.
Conduct data analysis and create appropriate
documentation and reports.

16.
Oversee technology and digital initiative
contracts and license agreements with outside parties and vendors and
coordinate related communication, e.g. Innovative Interfaces, Inc., OCLC,
Dematic ASRS, Lyrasis, bepress, Internet Archive, etc.

17.
Assist the University Librarian in
coordinating data definition and gathering on library activities for internal
and external purposes especially for formal university and professional
surveys.

18.
Foster technology development of staff.

19.
Monitor the automation marketplace for
potential software and hardware that might be appropriate for adoption or
purchase.

20.
Maintain awareness of trends in data and
information management, search technologies, digital preservation, repository
development, content exchange, and related areas.

In addition to specific jobs responsibilities,
all library faculty:

Participate in the faculty liaison program.

●
Work with the Head of Collection Management
and faculty in assigned departments to develop the collection.

●
Participate in library faculty governance.

●
As members of the Colgate library faculty,
participate in university governance and/or serve the university in other ways
as appropriate.

●
Demonstrate an active commitment to the
library profession as described in the Library
Faculty Handbook.

Qualifications

It is expected that all Colgate University
Libraries staff members will demonstrate exceptional workplace behaviors in the
execution of their specific position responsibilities.  These are:

Additionally, managers and supervisors are expected to help develop a
common vision by providing clear direction and priorities, clarifying roles and

recognition and coaching, and develop employees to best achieve their personal
and organizational goals.

Required:

Master’s degree, such as an MLS or MIS from an
ALA-accredited program, MS in computer science or other relevant degree.

Minimum of five years of progressively
responsible experience in information technology, including experience leading
and managing information technology or systems operations; successful
experience supervising, developing, and mentoring information technology
professionals.

Substantive knowledge of digital assets and
the technical infrastructure required for their life-cycle management,
including metadata requirements, migration strategies, best practices in
digital preservation, and relevant national and international standards.

Substantive knowledge of library systems,
digital libraries, and digital repositories.

Familiarity with modern software development
methodologies and technologies.

·Ability to work effectively and provide
leadership in a changing environment.

·Demonstrated project management experience
including ability to conceptualize, define and manage complex collaborative
projects and follow through to completion.

Experience or recent training in negotiating
licenses, contracts,  cooperative
agreements, and vendor management.

·Demonstrated effective fiscal management.

Ability to work collaboratively in a team
environment and to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.

Effective communication, interpersonal,
organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills with an ability to work with a widely diverse group of people.

A commitment to excellence in academic
librarianship and effectiveness in mentoring and encouraging librarians in
scholarly and professional activity.

Demonstrated
ability to work collegially with faculty, staff, and students.

Strong
working knowledge of the Microsoft Office software package and project
management software.

Preferred:

·
Prior experience working in an academic
library, library consortium or library services organization.

·
Prior higher education experience.

·
Successful record of developing and initiating
new programs

·
Experience managing integrated library
systems.

·
Experience working with digital publishing
platforms such as ContentDM and bepress’ Digital Commons
