The Rogers Family Company recently a selection of their whole bean coffee blends for me to review (and enjoy!) and share with you. To get the fullest effect of both freshness and flavor, I ground the beans each day and prepared with a French Press.

Here are my thoughts on the four different blends tried:

Fog Chaser: This was the first blend I encountered and I was immediately intrigued after a first taste by what seemed to be a hint of chicory in there (if you’re familiar with Louisiana coffee, you’ll know what that is). It’s a custom blend put together by San Francisco bay, of both exotic and single estate beans. Although it resulted in a pleasant brew, I would have preferred a deeper aroma and flavor; both were too subtle for me with this blend.

Breakfast Blend: Of the four blends I tried, this was definitely the mildest and I didn’t notice any distinct flavor coming through as I did with the Fog Chaser. It’s a blend of Central and South American beans. Again, I would have liked more aroma rising from the cup. Breakfast Blend makes a mild morning brew, if that’s what you like. My husband enjoyed it with his cream and sugar, but I was eager to try the last two blends, since I drink my java black and gravitate towards bold coffee!

French Roast: This was my favorite blend. As mentioned before, I’ve always enjoyed coffee black, and the French roast offered the most aroma and flavor of all the roasts. That’s especially important to me since I enjoy my coffee with nothing added. Grinding and brewing and lifting the steaming cup to my mouth are a huge part of the coffee experience, and the French roast was completely satisfying on those points, as well as delivering a smooth but full-bodied taste. This is the bag I would buy again.

Espresso Roast: Although described as rich and full-bodied, the Espresso roast might be milder than you expect. Like me, you probably associate Espresso with a small, concentrated (i.e. very strong) cup of coffee. When I opened the bag, I noticed the oily sheen common to a rich Espresso roast, and the aroma was promising. As brewed, it’s full-bodied and not bitter, so it’s a really nice blend that holds its own, but I still much preferred the depth of flavor and richness in the French roast overall.
