San Francisco, CA – September 12, 2014 – During the decades that followed the earthquake of 1906, new neighborhoods emerged in many parts of San Francisco. Influenced by the City Beautiful movement of the period, developers focused on land located in the outlying areas in the southern and western parts of the City. Some of the largest tracts of land west of Twin Peaks attracted a new form of residential neighborhood known as the ‘residence park’, areas defined by single family homes totally free of commercial development, integrated by a setting of green landscaped corridors and front yards. Balboa Terrace is among a very small number of such neighborhoods representing this approach to residential development in San Francisco.

While the ‘residence park’ neighborhoods often included a range of building styles, the character of Balboa Terrace was perhaps most significantly influenced by the life’s work of one of the Bay Area’s most prolific architects of this time, Harold G. Stoner. The homes of Stoner encompass English Cottage, Tudor Craftsman, Colonial Revival and Spanish Revival styles.

The Spanish Revival home located at the corner of San Benito Way and Upland Drive, just brought to the market by the Real Estate team of Harry Clark and Danny Fernandez of Zephyr Real Estate, embodies many of the qualities that consistently appear in the work of this talented designer. Like many of the Stoner homes in the neighborhood, this home is perfectly suited to its surroundings, reflecting a sensitivity to building scale and the gently sloping topography of the area. Meticulously maintained and expanded by the current owners, the home features generous spaces for entertaining and has three bedrooms and three full baths. The converted maid’s quarters, once a modest space behind the garage, now provides a family room connecting the kitchen to a professionally designed garden and private patio.

The home incorporates many elements that characterize the Spanish Revival homes designed by Stoner: a carefully articulated exterior with a variation in fenestration and an abundance of design details that create a one-of-a-kind appearance; an inviting covered entry graced with artisan ironwork; a second floor balcony with signature timber supports; and gracious interior spaces enhanced by arched openings between rooms, a variety of ceiling treatments and an abundance of hand-crafted details. A hammered copper fireplace hood, colored Batchelder tiles, hand-hewn beams and harlequin patterned parquet flooring are among the finishes that contribute to the charm of this historic home.

An evening reception is scheduled at the property with Jacqueline Proctor, author of Bay Area Beauty: The Artistry of Harold G. Stoner, Architect.
