Makar Sankranthi is a festival not just for families to unite but some of the major releases are seen during this eve. While some of the hyped movies could not utilize the festival season, others had another reason to celebrate in the form of box-office blockbusters.
Here’s a list of the movies which chose the Sankrathi eve for their releases.
Year – 2014

1: Nenokkadine
The psychological thriller film written and directed by Sukumar starred the Superstar Mahesh Babu and debutant Kriti Sanon in lead roles. Even though the movie received critical appreciation, especially for the performances by Mahesh Babu and Kriti Sanon, the movie didn’t fare well at the box-office. The lengthy run time was criticized while the production values, cinematography and global appeal made the movie gross $1.2 million in the US, making it one of the best openings ever for an Indian film and one of the fastest to reach $1 million mark.
Yevadu
The action thriller co-written and directed by Vamsi Paidipally featured Ram Charan, Shruti Haasan and Amy Jackson in the lead roles. After going through several delays, the movie came out as a Sankranthi release. Made on a budget of Rs. 350 million, the movie received favourable feedback from critics becoming commercially successful and grossed more than Rs. 600 million being declared as one of the highest grossing Telugu films of the year.
Heart Attack
The romantic movie written, directed and produced by Puri Jagannadh had Nithiin and Adah Sharma play the lead. The movie released worldwide to mixed reviews mainly from the critics but was declared a hit grossing Rs. 500 million in 50 Days. Anup Rubens music became the highlight of the movie and was received positively from everyone.

Year – 2013

Naayak
The Telugu action comedy directed by V. V. Vinayak featured Ram Charan in dual roles while Kajal Aggarwal and Amala Paul played the female leads. Released worldwide in more than 1600 screens as a Sankranthi release, the movie generated positive reviews from critics, collecting a total of Rs. 465 million and stood in the fifth place in the top 10 Telugu films with highest collection of Rs. 295 million in its first week.
Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu
SVSC written and directed by Srikanth Addala, was touted as the first multi-starrer in contemporary Telugu cinema with Venkatesh, Mahesh Babu, Samantha and Anjali in the lead roles. Released globally on the eve of Sankranthi, the movie received rave reviews from the critics and turned into a blockbuster. The family entertainer was loved by one and all with the songs creating a niche.

Year – 2012

Bodyguard
Directed by Gopichand Malineni, the movie had Venkatesh, Trisha in the lead roles. A remake of the Malayalam movie with the same name, the movie was a Sankranthi release and went on to become a hit at the box-office. Raking in Rs. 550 million, the movie was received positively even from the critics.
Businessman
The crime action movie was written and directed by Puri Jagannadh. Starring Mahesh Babu and Kajal Agarwal in the lead roles, the film raked in huge moolah and turned into a blockbuster. The movie had the largest opening for a Telugu movie and collected the share of Rs. 440 million in total at the box-office.
Nandeeswarudu
Written and directed by Sreeenu Yarajala, the movie had Nandamuri Taraka Ratna, Sheena Shahabadi, Jagapathi Babu in lead roles. Remake of the Kannada movie ‘Deadly Soma’, this movie could not grab the most of the Sankranthi eve and did not fare well at the box office.

Year – 2011

Parama Veera Chakra
The war drama directed by Dasari Narayana Rao was the 150th directorial venture for Dasari and had an ensemble cast – Nandamuri Balakrishna, Ameesha Patel, Neha Dhupia, Sheela, Jayasudha, Murali Mohan and Roja. Released during the Sankranthi weekend, the movie opened to poor reviews and could not fare well at the box office.

Mirapakay
Ravi Teja’s blockbuster was directed by Harish Shankar and starred Richa Gangapadhyay and Deeksha Seth as the female leads. Heavily based on the Tamil flick ‘Aegan’ which in turn was inspired from Bollywood movie, ‘Main Hoon Naa’. The movie opened to huge collections at the Box-office and was declared as the only hit in the Pongal releases of the year.
Anaganaga O Dheerudu
The fantasy adventure movie was directed by debutant Prakash Kovelamudi which was his first mainstream movie. Starring Siddharth and Shruti Hassan who was making her Telugu debut, the movie was co-produced by Disney World Cinema with a budget of Rs. 270 million. Released with a lot of hype, the movie failed to deliver at the box-office.

Golconda High School
The sports flick was written and directed by Mohan Krishna Indraganti and starred Sumanth along with Swati Reddy in lead roles. Released on the Sankranthi eve, the movie in addition to getting positive reviews from viewers and critics, it was declared as a commercial hit as well.
