LinkedIn has become the go-to platform for verifying people, displaying your abilities, and networking with other professionals. LinkedIn InMail involves privately messaging other people — in a professional manner — with your profile attached to it. It’s a great way to network and seek new opportunities. Here’s how to increase your LinkedIn InMail response rates and really take full advantage of this service.

Make your InMail’s personal

Sending out mass messages to people may be hindering your response rates rather than aiding them. It’s quite easy for people to pick up on whether the InMail was sent especially for them. And odds are they’re receiving more mass messages than personal ones.

Use a recipient’s profile to garner information; what they’ve shared, who they follow, what groups they belong to, their work history, etc. Including these details doesn’t take a huge amount of time but shows that you care about making a real connection.

So sending individual, personal InMail’s can help you out on multiple fronts. First, they express that you actually put time and effort into crafting a message for that individual. This takes a much more humanistic approach. Second, your message will stand out among the other non-personal mass messages. And third, you’ll actually get a higher response rate, even though you’re sending out less InMail’s.

Include personal interests when contacting people, not just professional details

Scan the recipients profile and really dig deep for personal interests that you can relate to in your message. Make the InMail as personal as possible, which is exactly what you want to score a large percentage of responses. And not just responses, but people that are truly engaged in what you have to offer.

Send your InMail’s during the week

As we all know, emails sent on Friday after 5PM are typically only going to be read Monday morning. The same applies to InMail’s.

The optimal times to send an InMail are when people typically check emails: In the morning, after lunch, and right before leaving work.

Use shared connections to introduce yourself

You can do this in two ways. The first is by using the “How You’re Connected” section on LinkedIn to view people that are also connected to the person you’re messaging. Then simply ask one of them to message them on your behalf saying that you would like to get in touch. Then send them a message yourself.

If they can’t or don’t want to introduce you, just mention their name in your message as a shared connection. Just like mutual acquaintances in real life can help expand your social circle, mutual connections on LinkedIn can expand your InMail response rates.

Send them to people who have checked out your profile

These people have already expressed an interest in who you are, which will make them much more likely to respond. Include a brief statement acknowledging that you noticed they looked at your profile, then proceed with your message.
