As the academic year 2014 – 15 winds down, our “Doctor at school “ program also will be successfully completing its activities this month. The program which started on Juy 1st 2014 to coincide with

Doctor’s day has been able to cover more than 12,300 students spanning 70 government schools across Bangalore. This program continues to provide platform for our student volunteers ( Interns ) and professional doctors to contribute to better health of children studying in government schools. We had 56 doctors and 63 interns who were part of this year program. Several institutions like Bosch, RR Medical Institute, Vittala Eye centre, BGS Global, 24X7 Dental lent their valuable support whole heartedly to make it effective and benefit children.

Every child was given a comprehensive check-up and treated with required medicines during the health camp itself. Students who were referred for further investigations were followed up to complete the cycle.

More than 5,600+ students got treated for dental issues like caries and scaling by a team of dentist using a mobile dental van at their school itself. These students had previously never got an opportunity to visit a dentist. Out of the 1044 students who were referred for eye check-up, 242 students were advised spectacles which has been provided. Two students also got operated for cataract and laser treatment. We also got ECG done for 71 students who were referred to a cardiologist at either BGS Global or Jayadeva institute. In most of the cases, parents of the children were advised further care and medicines. Actions are pursued for 6 students who require heart surgery.

Similarly, we had 349 students who were referred for ENT related issues. Each of the kid were administered medicines. Few students who require speech therapy and hearing aid are getting treated at Centre for hearing and speech. Overall, the program was able to meet the objective of access to good health for government school going children at these 70 schools. It also was a means of volunteering opportunity for several doctors who wish to contribute their bit to the society.
