Business Technology

Business Technology is a field that has vital importance to our success as a business and we will provide you with an experience that covers all of the Services divisions.

What you can expect

You will work in areas including: technology development, infrastructure, technical architecture, transformation and change. Our holistic approach will give you insight into how we impact the customer and work towards simplifying and creating new solutions for them. It’s the key to everything we do and allows us to trade across time zones, perform complex calculations, transfer funds and disseminate information between colleagues and to our customers.

As a graduate based in Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham or London, you'll complete three, eight month placements around the Technology business. This is a talent building programme and as you move through your rotations you will develop skills (technical and softer skills) that will take you through to your next rotation. You could work on major international change programmes or the delivery of next-generation solutions and play a vital part in building and maintaining the technology which allows us to retain our competitive edge. Throughout, your work we’ll touch all aspects of RBS, so variety – and the chance to explore the full spectrum of what we do – is guaranteed.

It is important that we make our technology secure and resilient to keep our business and our customers safe. Working here will enable you to have an impact on leading technology propositions for our customers and our colleagues across a variety of different channels, from trading platforms, purchasing and rolling out new software packages to mobile banking applications. You will be a fundamental part of our own technology strategy, application development, infrastructure and technical architecture as well as software for our Front Office Traders.

Examples of some of the projects our graduates have been involved with are:

Working on building bespoke and in-house trading systems for our Front Line traders on the desks. You will work with Java, C++, C# as well as operating systems such as Linux and mobile operating systems such as iOS and Android. All of our applications are built in-house so you can be sure your work on them will add lasting value for our business.

Negotiating the purchase of new software in the cost range of £100k and helping to ensure its effective roll out across the group, managing senior stakeholder relationships in the business and being a vital part in successfully rolling out such initiatives.

Financial reporting and ensuring the relevant reporting applications are fit for purpose, working closely with colleagues to ensure that the bank is able to offer financial reports internally and externally (even to the Bank of England) and prioritising the corresponding applications when these reports are due. Graduates would then determine what technical support would be required when the high level reporting is due and co-ordinate this accordingly. You will look to manage both internal and external relationships and deadlines to ensure effective roll out of such a project.

Implementation of new tools for our Enterprise Portfolio Management. Graduates have been charged with producing test scripts, user acceptance testing and ensuring your colleagues have simpler, safer and more efficient tools to be able to do business so that the customer has the best experience possible.

Transformation: This is where we deliver the strategic plan of RBS and manage significant bank wide change programmes that will take us into the future. Here you will have a direct impact on our future and will help to lead the oversight of our investment portfolios, meeting our goals and regulatory requirements and maintaining the high standards of our business.

We aim to deliver a strategic plan for RBS to manage significant bank wide change programs that will take us into the future. You will have the opportunity to make a direct impact on our long term ambitions and will help to lead the oversight of our investment portfolios, meeting our goals and regulatory requirements and maintaining the high standards of our business.

Who we are looking for

If you’re resilient, articulate and great with people, we want you. This isn’t an inward-looking business area: you’ll establish and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders at all levels and work across different sites as you do so.

You don’t need to come to us with advanced technical skills or knowledge, but rather one of your interests or passions should lend itself well to demonstrating the curious mindset of wanting to learn more about technology. Many of our graduate trainees have degrees in engineering, mathematics, economics, computing and sciences, but we’ll consider anyone showing a keen interest and aptitude for technology with a willingness to learn. Whatever your degree background and whatever classification you have achieved, we would more than welcome your application. Also, you do not need to come to us with any specific A-levels or UCAS points! As well as technical development you will be encouraged to develop broader capabilities such as communication, project management, team working and influencing skills. It is important that you are resilient, positive in dealing with change, confident in dealing with people and have an ability to create and sustain effective working relationships. You need to demonstrate flexibility as well as a drive for making our business the best that it can be and keep the customer at the forefront of everything that you do.

We will give you all the technical development that you will need to achieve a great, long term career as well as develop your broader capabilities in communication, project management, leadership and stakeholder relationships.
