Frisco ISD students and teachers will showcase their artwork side by side with professional artists this weekend during Arts in the Square.

The two-day festival will feature more than 120 local and regional artists selling their handmade creations. It runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. this Saturday, March 28 and Sunday, March 29 in Frisco Square.

Student artwork from each traditional FISD campus will be on display. Just like professional entries, student entries will be judged by a jury panel with cash prizes awarded to the winners.

The event will also include a variety of entertainment by FISD students including school choirs, drill teams, jazz ensembles and more, ranging from elementary to high school groups. Click here to view the schedule.

Though parking and admission to the event are free, there will be opportunities to support both the Frisco Education Foundation, which provides college scholarships, educational programs, and educator grants to students and staff in the Frisco Independent School District, and Frisco Family Services, which helps members of our community facing hunger, homelessness and other urgent needs.

The Frisco Education Foundation will host a Chalk Walk fundraiser on Saturday, March 28 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with artist check-in at 10 a.m. Students, families and businesses are invited to purchase a portion of sidewalk to showcase their artistic abilities with chalk drawings. A portion of the proceeds will support FISD graduating seniors pursuing a college degree in an art-related field. Click here for more information on how to reserve your chalk walk square by this Friday, March 27. Space is limited and walk-ups are welcome Saturday only if space is still available.

Approximately 1,200 clay bowls handmade by Frisco ISD art students in grades K-12 will be available for a $5 minimum donation to Frisco Family Services. The bowls are designed to serve as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world and the need to fight against hunger. Proceeds will support the Frisco Family Services food pantry. A grant from the Frisco Education Foundation to retired Vandeventer Middle School art teacher Brenda Pierce provided the funding to purchase the clay used in making the bowls.

In addition, the official poster for Arts in the Square was created by Centennial High School sophomore Jake Luedecke, a graphic design and illustration student at the Frisco ISD Career and Technical Education Center.

His design incorporates the artwork of four FISD winners in the Arts in the Square Poster contest. Each year, a jury selects a winner from artwork submitted by students from across Frisco ISD in each of the four categories: grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12.

This year’s winners include:

Ariane Zhang, Gunstream Elementary

Faith Song, Curtsinger Elementary

Chantel Ndungu, Roach Middle School

Andreana Tabacco, Centennial High School

Winners in each category will receive cash awards on Wednesday, March 25 during the Award Ceremony & Opening Reception for Arts in the Square. This free event is hosted by Frisco Arts in the Black Box Theater at the Frisco Discovery Center, 8004 N. Dallas Pkwy, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. All entries will be exhibited in the Frisco Art Gallery and the show is free and open to the public through March 29.
