Integrated professional competence course (IPCC) or Intermediate is the starting point of your chartered accountancy course. A student after clearing CPT or after passing out graduation or post graduation course can join IPCC. However to join IPCC after graduation or post graduation course, the student has to get minimum 55% marks in aggregate if he is a commerce graduate/post graduate or else 60% marks are required for non commerce graduate or post graduate students. Intermediate passed students of ICSI or institute of cost accountants of India can also directly join IPCC course if they do not have the required percentage in graduation or post graduation course.

IPCC or intermediate exams are conducted by ICAI every year in May and November. After passing out Intermediate course or IPCC a student will be eligible for final course of chartered accountancy. 

To apply for IPCC or Intermediate course you need to enroll yourself with ICAI. You can enroll yourself online at ICAI website. You can also download IPCC application form from ICAI website and register yourself by filling up this form. You need to submit these forms to your regional offices of your location.

After getting yourself registered for IPCC you need to undergo 35 hours of orientation course with ICAI and 100 hours of IT training with any of the ICAI approved institute.

After joining IPCC, you will be provided with study materials containing the whole syllabus. It is treated as a first step to become a chartered accountant where your understanding on subjects like accounting, business law, Cost accounting and financial management, income tax and service tax, advanced accounting, auditing and assurance and information technology and strategic management will be tested. You have 7 papers in IPCC course carrying 100 marks each.

To pass out IPCC one need to get 50% marks in aggregate in group I and group II in addition to 40% marks in each subjects. If you are appearing for one group then 50% marks has to be obtained in aggregate of that group in addition to 40% marks in each paper/subject. In case anyone obtained 60% marks in a paper and lost in other papers or not able to clear any groups for some reason then that paper will be exempted for the next three attempts and the student has to obtain 50% marks on other papers in aggregate and 40% marks in each subject. To calculate the aggregate marks, the exemption papers mark will also be considered. If the student is not able to clear the group within 3 attempts then again he has to appear that exempted paper in IPCC exam.

After training of 35 hours and 100 hours, you will be eligible to take practical training of 3 years under a chartered accountant. You can approach any chartered accountant in practice to train you for 3 years. After joining articleship training you need to intimate it to institute.

Within the first year of practical training you have to complete 15 days of GMCS training with ICAI. ICAI conduct GMSC trainings in many centered in India. You can contact your nearest branch and get details about it.

You can appear IPCC after completing 9 months of practical training including 8 months of study course from the date of registration i.e. 8 months of having submitted the IPCC registration form.

If you are able to clear both groups then you can enroll yourself for final course of chartered accountancy or else you need to appear once again in IPCC exams to pass it. After passing intermediate or IPCC course you will be eligible to join final course of chartered accountancy.

Documents required for Joining IPCC

Demand draft for registration to IPCC (should be drawn in favour of “the secretary, Institute of chartered accountants of India” payable at Mumbai/new Delhi/Kolkata/Chennai/Kanpur based on your location of registration)

Gradation or Post graduation mark sheets or Intermediate pass marks statements of ICSI or Institute of cost accountants of India, duly attested by a Chartered Accountant or Gazetted Officer or Head of the Institute as a proof towards your date of birth.

10th certificate as a proof of your date of birth.

In addition to the above documents you also required to submit your proof on nationality if you are a foreigner and proof of your SC/ST/OBC or disabled if you belong to any of these categories. For provisional registration students, a proof for pursuing final year graduation course in any college is required to be submitted.

A student who has appeared for final year graduation course can do a provisional registration to IPCC course. However such student has to compulsorily submit the necessary proof as required within 6 months of appearing the graduation course. Benefit of provisional registration is you can take orientation training and IT training even before your result is declared which will save your time. However your practical training can be started after becoming a graduate. If you are unable to produce the required documents within 6 months then your registration will be cancelled and registration fee along with other fee will be refunded back.
