BASIC PURPOSE:
The Senior Sybase Engineer is a senior technical resource in Sybase database management and is responsible for the implementation and effective and efficient maintenance of related technologies. In addition, this individual has advanced knowledge of Information Technology at large, with an understanding of related disciplines and how they interoperate. The Senior Sybase Engineer is responsible for leading implementation and troubleshooting efforts and aiding in design efforts.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Serves as senior subject matter expert in the field of Sybase database management, maintaining a strong understanding of the field and its related technologies.
2. Provides technical support to ensure the ongoing efficient and reliable operations of related MFS information systems.
3. Proactively develops and maintains strong knowledge of MFS information systems and their related components, and makes recommendations to improve the reliability, scalability, performance, or security of these systems as appropriate.
4. Leverages technology to automate manual tasks, and seeks to improve efficiency wherever practicable and appropriate. Makes recommendations for process improvements.
5. Develops, enforces and maintains MFS Information Security controls, procedures, and standards.
6. Receives broad goals and overall objectives from Management and assists in establishing and implementing the methods to attain them.
7. Accountable for meeting assigned project objectives including timelines and budgeting. Works on the most complex projects and provides innovative suggestions for solutions.
8. Serve as technical mentor other members of the team.
9. Collaborates with other IT and business groups, readily sharing information with others.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
1. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a related technical field.
2. Seven years of related Information Technology experience on Sybase database technologies.
3. Proven experience with database diagnostics and performance management tools like Quest, Db Artisan etc.

4. Proven experience with planning and implementing Sybase database auditing.
5. Proven experience in at least one of the following Sybase technologies : Sybase Replication technologies: Sybase Warm Standby, MSA, table level replication or Sybase Mirror Activator
6. Proven experience with database backup and recovery policies and procedures in a large scale production environment. Must have experience with at least one enterprise database backup utility.
7. Proven experience with Sybase MDA tables.
8. Hands-on 24x7 Production Support experience.
9. Hands-on experience with Sybase ASE and Replication Server performance tuning.
10. Hands-on experience with SQL and T-SQL tuning and excellent knowledge of Sybase remote procedure calls, CIS.
11. Proven experience with using traces to diagnose and troubleshoot Sybase performance issues.
12. Proven experience with high availability and disaster recovery environment for Sybase databases.
13. Proven experience with developing and implementing unix shell scripts.
14. Proven experience with database capacity planning.
15. Strong subject matter expertise in the field, with familiarity with other related Information Technologies.
16. Solid understanding of Systems Development Life Cycle models.
17. Deep knowledge of Sybase ASE internals.
18. Sound knowledge of Sybase management tools.
19. Expert knowledge of planning, implementing and troubleshooting distributed Sybase databases.
20. Knowledge of database logical and physical design.
21. Knowledge of SQL tuning and optimization.
22. Expert knowledge of various Sybase technologies for data movement, e.g., bcp.
23. Ability to perform operational procedures and maintain associated documentation independently.
24. Demonstrated ability to interact, communicate, build relationships, and negotiate well with members of team and senior management. Makes effective presentations.
25. Strong analytical, problem solving, writing and organizational skills; ability to work effectively under pressure.
