ANGELES CITY–The five-day 2nd Aklatan (Aklat Layong Talasin ang Kaisipan) Festival of the city was formally opened on Monday at the Angeles City Library here.
Councilor Edu Paminutan, in his opening remarks, said the City Library is not only a “luxury” of one’s city, but also “it is a need of society.” He said further that the personality of every book reader, in one way or another, is described by the book he reads. Thus, the topic for the essay contest for this year is “I am the book I read.”
An inter-school writing competition for both grade school and high-school students will be held on the first and second day of the festival. They will contend on the essay and poetry categories in the English, Filipino, and Kapampangan languages.
Festival Director Roilingel Calilung, meanwhile, disclosed that the festival, which will run from August 5 to 9 features lecture, seminars, and workshops on the demand for 21st century librarians, approaches in writing and teaching local history, best practices in global library service, and ancient Kapampangan script.
Among the speakers are the Chief Librarian of Baliuag University, Dr. Juan Buenrostro Jr., the College Librarian of Far Eastern University, Martin Julius Perez, and Kapampangan professor Arnel Garcia.
A book fair exhibit at the said library will also be held, wherein book exhibitors came from Angeles City Library Book Store, Circular Books Trading, Greatbooks Trading, and Philippine Christian Bookstore, will participate.
To culminate the festival, on August 9, the Makabayung Aguman para karing Daralit at Talasulat (MAKUDTA) is set to have the Piyalben 2013: Pyalung. Kuwentuhan. Dalitan–a movie commentary wherein the participants are free to share their thoughts in the film seen.
