Prudential Eye Awards Inaugural Awards for Emerging Contemporary Asian Artists to Launch in Singapore
London, 14 November 2013: The inaugural Prudential Eye Awards will launch in Singapore on 18 January 2014 at Suntec City. These new international contemporary art awards celebrate and recognise emerging artistic talent from across greater Asia.

The Awards offer a platform for contemporary Asian artists from over thirty countries to participate in a global event which will recognise excellence in Photography, Painting, Sculpture, Installation and Digital/ Video. Additional awards will celebrate achievement by an exhibition of Asian art, an award for excellence by an emerging gallery in greater Asia, and outstanding contribution by an artist to Asian contemporary art.
Shortlisted artists from each discipline will feature in an exhibition at Singapore’s Suntec City, from 16 January to 5 February 2014, which will be free to the public. Five category winners will be announced at an awards ceremony to be held on 18 January. One overall winner will go on to be exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery in London, UK in the summer of 2014.
The Prudential Eye Awards are founded by the Global Eye Programme, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting emerging artists, established by Parallel Contemporary Art in collaboration with Saatchi Gallery. Prudential is the title sponsor of the Awards, having previously supported Indonesian Eye (2011) and Hong Kong Eye (2013) exhibitions – collectively known as Asian Eye. To date, the Global Eye Programme has held 17 exhibitions worldwide, and been viewed by over two million people. In addition, Prudential will work with the British Council as an education partner to organise a series of activities to promote arts appreciation to students and youth in Singapore.
Artists will be nominated by a group of experts in the field of Asian art and judged by an independent panel featuring Serenella Ciclitira, Founder, Parallel Contemporary Art; Nigel Hurst, CEO, Saatchi Gallery; Tsong-Zung Chang, Co-Founder, Asia Art Archive; Sir David Green, former Director-General, British Council; Nick Mitzevich, Director, Art Gallery of Southern Australia; Lee Young Hye, Creative Director, Gwangju Design Biennale; AndreŃ— Erofeev, independent curator and critic; and Tan Boon Hui, Group Director, Programmes Group, National Heritage Board of Singapore. The winner of each category will be awarded a prize of US$20,000 and the overall winner will receive a further US$30,000 with the opportunity to exhibit at the Saatchi Gallery in London.

Tan Boon Hui, Group Director, Programmes Group, National Heritage Board said:

About the Prudential Eye Awards judges:
Serenella Ciclitira has an Honours Degree in Art History from Trinity College, Dublin and has worked extensively with artists and galleries throughout the world. With her husband, David Ciclitira, she is the co-founder of Global Eye Programme and a member of its curatorial board. She has been an Honorary Fellow at the Royal College of Art in London, and since 1990 has been awarding the Parallel Prize for Painting and the Serenella Ciclitira Scholarship for Sculpture. Winner of the Parallel Prize, Gillian Carnegie, was later nominated for the Turner Prize and Benedict Carpenter and Gereon Krebber went on to win the prestigious Jerwood Sculpture Prize. Martin Westwood, a former Parallel Prize winner, was featured in the Art Now exhibition at the Tate Britain in 2005.
Nigel Hurst is Director and Chief Executive of the Saatchi Gallery in London. He graduated from Goldsmiths College, London University in 1986 and since then has curated numerous international exhibitions. He joined the Saatchi Gallery as a curator in 1997, working on Sensation at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, the National Galerie at the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin and the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York. More recent exhibitions have focused on Asian contemporary art, including The Revolution Continues: New Art from China (2008), Unveiled: New Art from Middle East (2009), The Empire Strikes Back: Indian Art Today (2010), The Silk Road in collaboration with the City of Lille, France (2011) and Korean Eye (2012). He has also been a member of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Public Art Advisory Board since 2009, is a collection advisor for Chelsea & Westminster Hospital and also sits on the Development Council of University of the Arts London.
Chang Tsong-Zung (Johnson Chang) is curator, guest professor of China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, director of Hanart TZ Gallery and board member of Asia Art Archive and Inter-Asia School. He has been active in curating Chinese exhibitions since the 1980s, including China’s New Art Post-1989 (travelling 1993-98), Special Exhibitions at São Paulo Biennial 1996 and Venice Biennale 2001. Major curatorial projects include the Power of the Word series of exhibitions (since 1999), the Yellow Box series of research projects about contemporary art practice and Chinese culture of connoisseurship (since 2004). He co-curator of Guangzhou Triennial 2008 Farewell to Post-Colonialism, West Heavens projects of India-China art and social thought (since 2010), and was co-curator of the 9th Shanghai Biennale 23012, Reactivation.
Sir David Green KCMG was Director-General of the British Council, the UK’s international organisation for educational and cultural relations, from 1999-2007. In 2007 the British Council had 240 centres in 110 countries and a staff complement of 7,500. From 1990-1999 he was Director of Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO). In 1999 VSO had 2,000 volunteers sharing their skills and experience in 60 countries. From 1976-1990 he worked for Save the Children in a variety of roles culminating in the post of Deputy Director-General. After graduating from Cambridge University in 1972, he worked as an art teacher in a comprehensive school in South Yorkshire. He is Chair of The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts, Dartington Hall Trust, Dash Arts and Soumik Datta Arts and on the Board of The Royal Court Theatre and the London University of the Arts; he was awarded the CMG in 1999 and the KCMG in 2005; he is a Freeman of both London and Freetown. He has a strong interest in the visual arts, theatre, international development, cultural relations and is a practicing painter.
Nick Mitzevich, Director, Art Gallery of South Australia since July 2010. He was previously Director of the University of Queensland Art Museum, Brisbane, a position he held from 2007 to 2010. In 2009 he was recognised for his outstanding achievements by receiving the Museum and Gallery Services Queensland 2009 Outstanding Achievement Award. He has curated notable international and national exhibitions, including AES+F The Revolution starts now! (2010), Margaret Olley: Life’s journey (2009), Strange Cargo: contemporary art as a state of encounter (2006) and Auto Fetish: the mechanics of desire (2004).
Lee Young Hye, Creative Director, Gwangju Design Biennale is the President of designhouse inc. In 2008 she launched the Strategic Design Institute and in 2007 founded the Digital Design House. Ms Lee has published over 500 books and launched such magazines as The Celebrity in 2013, Men’s Health magazine in 2006, Luxury in 2001, style H in 2005, Home Style & Living in 1987 and DESiGN in 1976.She is the Director of the Gwangiu Design Biennale 2013, is on the Board of Directors for Seoul Design Foundation and a Committee member for Korea CEO Forum and the Korean Marketing Club Association.
AndreŃ— Erofeev is an independent curator and art critic. Formerly Chief Curator at The State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, he was also the Head of Contemporary Art at both Tretyakov Gallery and The State Museum Tsaritsyno. During his tenure at both institutions, he put on no less than 40 exhibitions focused on modern and contemporary Russian art. As a researcher and curator, Erofeev has explored modern art through Abstraction: Tendencies of Abstract Art in Moscow 1950-1990 at State Tretyakov Gallery in 2003 , andRussian Art from the Abstraction to the Conceptualism at Central House of Artists in Moscow in 1999. More recently, Erofeev curatedPussy Riot and the Russian Tradition of Art Rebellion in Prague, and curated Breaking the Ice: Moscow Art 1960-1980s at London’s Saatchi Gallery. He has curated exhibitions in Paris, including Le cas Pussy Riot at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, and in Barcelona where he exhibited In Total Disorder: Russian Art Now. With a PhD from the Moscow State University, Erofeev is regarded as a leading scholar in twentieth century and contemporary art from Russia and the SFU region.
Tan Boon Hui, Group Director, Programmes Group of National Heritage Board, is a curator and project director and co-curator for the Singapore Biennale 2013: If the World Changed. From 1 July 2013, he assumed the role of Group Director, Programmes at the National Heritage Board (NHB) overseeing exhibitions, programmers and outreach events across the museums, institutions and divisions of the NHB. Boon Hui is concurrently artistic director for the Singapore Festivarts 2015, an interdisciplinary festival of visual, performing, design and film in France. Prior to this, he was also project director for the Singapore Biennale 2011: Open House and Director of the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) from 2009 to 2013. In the latter role, he oversaw the transformation of SAM into a leading centre for contemporary Southeast Asian and Asian art. In 2011, he co-curated the landmark exhibition of contemporary art from Southeast Asia Negotiating Home History and Nation. During his tenure as head of programming at the newly re-opened National Museum of Singapore from 2006 to 2009, he has also created large scale festivals and events such as the Night Festival, the Children’s Season (interactive exhibition and performing arts festival for young audiences) and the first major season of contemporary visual and performing arts from the Arab World and Turkey-Under the Crescent Moon. From 1989 to 2002, he was Assistant Curator for Southeast Asia at the Asian Civilisations Museums where he was responsible for the Peranakan Chinese and Malay world collections. From 2002-2005, he handled international development and Visual and Literary arts development at the National Arts Council.

Parallel Contemporary Art collaborated with the Saatchi Gallery to launch the Global Eye Programme in 2008. The Korean Eye, Indonesian Eye and Hong Kong Eye exhibitions have since provided young artists with platforms from which to showcase their artistic talent, through touring exhibitions and features in published catalogues.
