Craft Scotland (Edinburgh) offers jeweler Naomi Mcintosh, who creates sculptural jewelry fabricated of interlocking sections of walnut embellished with an occasional segment of silver or gold, alongside the work of bespoke furniture maker John Galvin.
Focusing on craft and design in wood, ceramics and furniture by both European and American artists, Sarah Myerscough Gallery (London) returns to SOFA CHICAGO showcasing technical masters producing innovative design and contemporary craft objects. Artists represented include Christian Burchard, Liam Flynn, Michael Peterson, Marc Ricourt among others.
19-year SOFA veteran Heller Gallery (New York) promises more than 20 pieces by Philip and Matt Moulthrop. Heller Gallery has represented the Moulthrop family for 27 years, and while their turned wood vessels are not joint efforts, their distinctive modernist style spans three generations.
20-year SOFA veteran Jean Albano Gallery (Chicago) offers a selection of work by John Torreano (whose Wall Gems were featured in the SOFA CHICAGO 1994 catalog!). In Torreano’s latest pieces, wooden balls have replaced the embedded gems on flat, planar surfaces while the gem shapes of the wall sculptures have morphed into spheres.
Another 20-year SOFA veteran, Tom Riley of Riley Galleries (Cleveland OH) declares “You don’t know wood until you have seen our astoundingly diverse collection.” The gallery will present the work of 26 artists from seven countries – many of whom will also be featured in the American Association of Woodturners (AAW) special exhibit CURRENTS.
UK-based flow (London) offers a selection of European objects inspired by the complexity and beauty in nature including stunning vessels by Hans Henning Pederson that highlight the complexity of color and patterns found in wood.
For the first-time ever, SOFA CHICAGO hosts a German Pavilion featuring German art and design including work by Siegfried Schreiber whose elegant lathe-turned pieces are sure to be a favorite among wood collectors.
First-time SOFA CHICAGO exhibitor, Diehl Gallery (Jackson Hole) features Austin-based Caprice Pierucci. Inspired by her fiber and tapestry weaving background, Pierucci is best known for her wood wall-reliefs evocative of skeletons, shells and landscapes.
20-year SOFA CHICAGO veteran, William Zimmer Gallery (Mendocino), will feature an exciting exhibit to include a Sam Maloof rocker, and a special presentation of wood artists from Australia and New Zealand.
