2016-01-11

The Golden Globes is the first event in Hollywood’s season of self-congratulations. Bringing together the biggest stars in television (Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon included!) and film, celebrities dressed their best — with only a few misses — for the big event.

Alicia Vikander, Louis Vuitton’s muse of the moment, was perfection in a white gown designed by Nicolas Ghesquière. Eva Longoria was also in white, wearing a Gucci gown with spring florals. Gina Rodriguez, at only her second Golden Globes (and nominated both times) wowed in a blue Zac Posen off-the-shoulder gown. Brie Larson, the breakout Indie star of Room, seemingly took her inspiration from the show’s statuette and described the Calvin Klein number as Joan of Arc-like armor.

As for those that missed the mark, the list was very short. Sophia Bush, a presenter, could’ve taken more risks and Alan Cummings, who wore sneakers, probably should’ve dressed things up a bit.

Best: Jennifer Lopez in Giambattista Valli at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Jennifer Lopez is the queen of the naked dress, but for the Golden Globes she went for something “completely different” in a yellow dress from Giambattista Valli (in other words, she didn’t show excessive amounts of skin).

Worst: Kate Hudson in Michael Kors at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Kate Hudson, channeling Britney Spears circa her “Hit Me Baby One More Time” era, showed off her abs in a Michael Kors look. Adding even more to the ‘90s look, her crop top also featured a choker. The actress, at the event to present an award, also showed off a shorter ‘do.

Best: Jennifer Lawrence in Dior at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Obviously wearing Dior, Jennifer Lawrence showed some skin in a red cutout gown. But while the dress is pretty simple, she really made it a standout with her amazing Chopard choker.

Best: Brie Larson in Calvin Klein Collection at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Brie Larson has been around for years, quietly killing it in Indies, but she’s finally broken into the mainstream with Room. And there’s no better way to make an entrance to the big leagues than by showing up to the Golden Globes in a gold sequin dress. You can’t deny a woman who’s dressed like a statuette the win.

Best: Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Alicia Vikander, nominated for two different movies, wore a white gown from her favorite brand Louis Vuitton. Designed by Nicolas Ghesquière, the white dress is beautiful in its simplicity, with cream stripes, a belt accentuating her waist, and ruffles around the neckline. The Swedish star proves the old adage to be very true: sometimes less is more.

Best: Gina Rodriguez in Zac Posen at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Wearing a Zac Posen dress with Neil Lane diamonds and Jimmy Choo shoes, the Jane the Virgin actress, nominated for her role for the second year in a row (with the show only in its second season!), brought her dad as her date.

Best: Lady Gaga in Versace at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Lady Gaga looks amazing covered in paint, but she looks even better with a classy gown on.

Best: Zoe Kazan in Miu Miu and Sia-inspired hair with her date Paul Dano at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Winning the award for cutest couple of the night, Paul Dano, nominated for Love and Mercy, and Zoe Kazan, in a blush striped gown and Sia-inspired hair, dressed like they were coming from a cool wedding in Williamsburg.

Worst: Katy Perry in Prada at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Katy Perry wore Pantone’s color of the year — rose quartz — with a bump-it, making for a very Snooki-like look.

Worst: Kate Winslet in Ralph Lauren at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Kate Winslet looks beautiful, but the silhouette is boring.

Best: Julianne Moore in Tom Ford at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Walking the red carpet with the designer himself, Julianne Moore picked the perfect shade of blue to go with her red hair.

Best: Olivia Wilde in Michael Kors at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Very pregnant the last time she was at the Globes, Olivia Wilde was down a fetus on the red carpet for 2016. Wearing a red Michael Kors gown, the actress was glowing in the sequin piece and accessorized with a matching ruby necklace.

Best: Lily James in Marchesa at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

The Cinderella star looked just like a princess in her white Marchesa gown made with layers chiffon.

Best: Amber Heard in Gucci at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

The teleprompter might’ve stopped working while she was presenting with Jaimie Alexander, but at least she looked great doing so.

Best: Kirsten Dunst in Valentino Haute Couture at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Kirsten Dunst won for sexiest cleavage of the night in a black Valentino Haute Couture gown.

Best: Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Lanvin at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who seemingly can’t fail when it comes to red carpet dressing, looked lovely in a lace Lanvin gown.

Best: Rooney Mara in Alexander McQueen at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Rooney Mara must’ve really loved what she was wearing — a blush ruffly number — because she smiled on the red carpet! She added some color to the pale ensemble with a red lip and pulled her hair back into a high ponytail.

Worst: Jennifer Jason Leigh in bespoke Roland Mouret at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

This might be comeback season for Jennifer Jason Leigh, but her fashion seems to be lagging behind her acting talent.

Worst: Rachel McAdams in Lanvin at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Her hair and makeup might be stunning, but Rachel McAdams looked like she pulled a Sound of Music and made a dress out of her curtains.

Worst: Maura Tierney in Elizabeth Kennedy at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

She took home the award for her work in The Affair, but that’s the only accolade she’s receiving.

Worst: Patricia Arquette in black and white at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Just take away the white bow and the black dress would’ve been neutral.

Worst: Natalie Dormer in J. Mendel at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Natalie Dormer killed it on the Hunger Games press tour, taking tons of risks, yet fell short in a red and black dress at the Golden Globes.

Best: Olivia Palermo in Delpozo and David Webb at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Why Olivia Palermo is at the Golden Globes is a mystery, but at least she looks great.

Best: Melissa McCarthy in a robe dress of her own design at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Looking glittery and gorgeous, Melissa McCarthy amazed in a gown made with a fabric that kind of looked like liquid.

Best: Taylor Schilling in Thakoon at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Kudos to Taylor Schilling for not only wearing a jumpsuit but showing off lots of skin in a sexy and sophisticated way.

Worst: Jada Pinkett-Smith in Atelier Versace at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

On hand to support her husband, Jada Pinkett-Smith pulled a Kendall Jennner and went all monochromatic in emerald.

Best: Rachel Bloom in Christian Siriano at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Rachel Bloom (who won for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) wore two pairs of Spanx and a corset underneath her custom Christian Siriano gown.

Worst: Queen Latifah in Badgley Mischka at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

The color’s great but the dress itself looks off the rack (not a bad thing, but in this case it just didn’t work).

Best: Matt Damon, in Versace, and his wife, Luciana Barroso in a violet gown, at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

When is Matt Damon not a winner?

Best: Amy Adams in Atelier Versace at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Matching her hair to her dress, Amy Adams was a winner in a form-fitting gown that was embellished with crystals along the waist that then cascaded down the left side of her dress.

Best: Maggie Gyllenhaal in Marc Jacobs at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

From Marc Jacobs’ red carpet collection, it only makes sense that someone would wear a piece from it. The gold and black floral fabric made the dress a standout, considering the cut is pretty tame.

Best: Cate Blanchett in Givenchy at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Cate Blanchett did act in a period piece so it makes sense she’d pull a vintage-like dress with ‘20s-inspired fringe.

Worst: Amy Schumer in Prabal Gurung at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

She disappointed by not matching with Jennifer Lawrence, and even further dissappointed in an unflattering and stiff dress.

Worst: Amanda Peet in Marchesa at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

The high neckline makes Amanda Peet look like she stepped out of a time machine from the Victorian era (not in a good way).

Worst: Jenna Dewan-Tatum in Zuhair Murad at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

It’s not that Jenna Dewan-Tatum looks bad, she just could’ve done so much better.

Worst: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Atelier Versace at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

When you’re one of the sexiest models in the world, your look should be the most exciting one out there. Unfortunately, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley dressed like a glam ice skater and not an in-demand catwalker.

Worst: Malin Ackerman in Reem Acra at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Why won’t the peplum trend die? It needs to be buried already.

Worst: Leslie Mann in Monique Lhuillier at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

This dress is confusing. That is all.

Worst: Corinne Foxx, aka Miss Golden Globe, in Paolo Sebastian at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Did Corinne Foxx just re-wear her prom dress?

Worst: Viola Davis in Marchesa at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

In a dark blue gown with sequins placed all over, Viola Davis’s dress looked like a night sky. While pretty, the color wasn’t the best for her skintone and there was way too much going on.

Best: Jill Solloway in Stella McCartney creepers with Gaby Hoffman in Zero Maria Cornejo at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

The best producer/actress pair around was also the best dressed producer/actress pair at the Golden Globes.

Best: Taraji P. Henson in Stella McCartney working it in white at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

What Taraji P. Henson lacked in originality she made up for in posing skills on the red carpet.

Best: Uzo Adubo in Talbot Runhof at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

The innovative sleeves on Uzo Adubo’s sequin gown give her an automatic ticket to the top of the best dressed list.

Best: Saoirse Ronan in Yves Saint Laurent Couture by Hedi Slimane at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Expecting something cooler from the hip Brooklyn star, still no fault could be found in Saoirse Ronan’s Yves Saint Laurent Couture by Hedi Slimane gown.

Best/Worst: Jane Fonda in Yves Saint Laurent Couture by Hedi Slimane at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Jane Fonda gets best for taking a really big risk and wearing something totally loco, but also worst for wearing something totally loco.

Worst: Heidi Klum in Marchesa at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Sad face for the poor pigeon that had to die in order to make Heidi Klum’s Marchesa gown.

Worst: Emilia Clarke in Valentino at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Props to Emilia Clarke for being on trend and wearing a cape but the Mother of Dragons could’ve been on fire.

Worst: Calista Flockhart in Andrew Gn at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

On-hand to support her husband Harrison Ford, who presented an award, Calista Flockhart looked fine. And that’s it.

Best: Zendaya in Marchesa at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

The superstar wins on the red carpet again.

Best: Angela Bassett in red at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

The lady in red! Angela Bassett is red hot at the awards.

Best: Lola Kirke in Monique Lhullier at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

The young beauty rocked the red carpet in a one-shouldered, mustard-colored gown.

Best: Eva Longoria in Georges Hobeika at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

The bride-to-be looked ethereal in a white dress embellished with florals.

Worst: Regina King in a gold and sliver sequin gown at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

If the white chiffon train was removed, she might’ve received a different fate.

Best: Emmy Rossum in Armani Privé at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Sure her Armani Privé red gown is beautiful, but it’s really her amazing diamond Bulgari necklace that makes the look.

Best: America Ferrara in yellow Jenny Packham at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Wearing one of the hottest colors of the night, America Ferrara somehow made mustard look chic.

Worst: Eva Green in Givenchy at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Without the red lip, Eva Green would’ve gotten completely lost in the nude gown.

Worst: Sophia Bush in Narciso Rodriguez at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Sophia Bush went for a simple and classic look — black and diamonds. The gown was custom made for her, and she said that she loves to just dress up because she “doesn’t get to do that a lot.” Huh?

Best: Joanne Froggatt in Reem Acra at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Joanne Froggatt went for the plunge in a Reem Acra gown. A perennial Golden Globes attendee, the Downton Abbey star showed some skin with a serious plunging neckline, which was actually a cutout and covered in a sheer fabric.

Best: Jamie Lee Curtis in a navy blue and black long-sleeved gown at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Jamie Lee Curtis killed it in a form-fitting navy blue gown, which was covered in black flowers, offering a lighter touch to an otherwise dark ensemble. Pretty fitting, considering she’s the star of Scream Queens, one of the darkest comedies of all time.

Worst: Tara Lynne Barr in a red asymmetrical gown at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

The young star of Casual, Tara Lynn Barr went all out (and maybe a little too out — One shoulder! Lots of color! Layers galore!).

Best: Jamie Alexander in Genny at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Jamie Alexander looked like a gem in an emerald gown from designer Genny. The star of Blindspot, she admitted her look was held together by “lots of tape.”

Best: Judith Light in a white pants suit at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Judith Light, who’s in the highly-acclaimed Transparent starring Jeffrey Tambor, worked the red carpet in a crisp cream-colored pants suit. The trousers flared at the bottom and featured a tuxedo stripe.

Worst: Michaela Watkins in Christian Siriano at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

The star of Hulu’s Casual — if you don’t watch it, consider binging ASAP! — Michaela Watkins wore a bright gown with a trumpet flare bottom.

Worst: Alan Cummings wearing sneakers at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Alan Cummings, who was in Australia in the morning and on the red carpet before the sun went down, was business on the top and athleisure on the bottom. He wore a royal blue tuxedo jacket with skinny trousers and high top sneakers.

Best: Portia Doubleday in Naeem Khan at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

The Mr. Robot star sparkled like a disco ball on the red carpet.

Best: Melissa Benoist in Monique Lhuillier at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Sweet, floral and strapless. Well played Melissa, well played!

Best: Laverne Cox in Elizabeth Kennedy at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

It was her first Golden Globes, and Ms. Cox turned it out with aplomb.
