Having arrived in Monaco during the Fête de la Mer on Saturday 25th June, Giovanni Soldini today presented his new Maserati Multi70, in the presence of its owner, industrialist John Elkann, Gianni Agnelli’s grandson, and Pierre Casiraghi, both of whom are regular crew members on Maserati.

A new era beckons

After three intense years sailing the globe on the mono-hull Maserati VOR70, Giovanni Soldini and his crew have switched to the Multi70, a very high-performance trimaran capable of impressive speeds. Measuring 21.2m in length, with a beam of 16.8m and a 29m high mast, the Maserati Multi70 can rise up off the water on her rudders and foils, significantly reducing her wetted surface area.

Programme 2016

Attempt at the Monaco-Porto Cervo crossing (September 2016): a distance of 195nm. The current record was set in 2012 by the Yacht Club de Monaco-flagged mono-hull Esimit Europa 2 of 10 hours, 13 minutes and 42 seconds at an average speed of 19 knots.

Rolex Middle Sea Race (starts 22nd October 2016): one of the great classic offshore races. Launched in 1968 and now in its 37th edition, it has attracted leading names in international sailing over the years. The 608nm route starts and finishes in Malta and involves an anti-clockwise circumnavigation of Sicily, and taking in the Aeolian Islands, Egadi Islands, Pantelleria and Lampedusa. The current record for this race was set by Rambler (USA) in 2007 in 47 hours, 55 minutes and 3 seconds.

The RORC Transatlantic Race (begins 26th November 2016): the third and last challenge for the Maserati Multi70 which starts in Lanzarote in the Canaries, arriving in Grenada in the Caribbean after 3,000 nautical miles of sailing.

A passion for foiling

Having already confirmed his participation in the Rolex Middle Sea Race, Pierre Casiraghi continues his season on his GC32 Malizia. “I really can’t wait to discover what it’s like to sail on this Multi70, and to compare the similarities and differences between the trimaran and the GC32,” he says. The Yacht Club’s Vice-President, who is competing this year in the GC32 Racing Tour, left straight after for Lake Garda in Italy where he and his crew are training before Act 2 of the season which takes place in Malcesine from 7th to 10th July. A reminder that the Monegasque team created the surprise of the first stage by winning a race and clinching two third places to finish second in the owner-driver category.
