itemis AG, a leading German specialist for model-driven software development (MDSD), has today announced its strategic membership of the Eclipse Foundation. Through this membership, itemis will be providing the Eclipse Foundation with a team of developers for the Eclipse Modeling Project (EMP). As a result of this, itemis will in future be playing a key role in determining and pushing ahead Eclipse Modeling’s strategic alignment. itemis has been a member of the Eclipse Foundation for two years and has to date provided committers for the Eclipse Modeling Project. The company now joins the ranks of Iona, Nokia and SAP as the seventh strategic member of Eclipse from Europe.

As well as placing Sven Efftinge and Peter Friese, who in recent years have also been involved with the project as freelance developers, itemis is also placing five further itemis staff as full-time developers on the permanent team of developers working on the Eclipse Modeling Project. These include other Eclipse development wizards such as Karsten Thoms, Jan Köhnlein and Patrick Schönbach. The team will work together on the constant further development and quality improvement of modeling based on Eclipse Open Source technology. itemis will also be providing the Eclipse community with a global training program relating to Eclipse modeling.

“We are relying on Open Source and by so doing we want to engage even more strongly in the development, support and promotion of Eclipse projects,” says Wolfgang Neuhaus, Director of itemis AG and new Member of the Supervisory Board of the Eclipse Foundation. “We are keen to play our role in ensuring that Eclipse modeling is given even greater usability. This is why we are happy to place our Eclipse specialists at the service of the community.”

“We are delighted to welcome itemis as a strategic member,” says Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation. “itemis will strengthen the modeling community at Eclipse. I am sure itemis’ professional support and further development will have a positive impact on the continued success of the Eclipse Modeling project.”

About Eclipse Modeling Project (EMP)

The Eclipse Modeling Project (EMP) focuses on the evolution and promotion of model-based development technologies within the Eclipse community. Borland Software and IBM are co-leaders of the project and continue to advance Eclipse modeling technologies and to adopt open standards related to software modeling.

A number of industry-leading organizations have committed to the project and are already using Eclipse-based modeling frameworks in their products: including Borland, Compuware, IBM, ILOG, Omondo and Oracle Corporation.

The goal of the project is to unite several existing projects related to modeling under one umbrella for the purposes of fostering collaboration, unifying direction and improving inter-operability. Current projects include, but are not limited to:

Eclipse Modeling Framework EMF: Already widely adopted, EMF is a modeling framework and code generation facility for building tools and other applications based on a structured data model.

Graphical Modeling Framework GMF: GMF provides the fundamental infrastructure and components for developing visual design and modeling surfaces in Eclipse.

Unified Modeling Language 2.0 UML2: Based on the Object Management Group (OMG) specification, Eclipse UML2 is an EMF-based implementation of the UML 2.x metamodel for the Eclipse platform.

Generative Modeling Tools GMT: GMT aims to produce a set of research tools in the area of model-driven software development.

About Eclipse Foundation

Eclipse is an open source community whose projects are focused on providing an extensible development platform and application frameworks for building software. Eclipse provides wide-ranging tools and frameworks that span the software development lifecycle, including support for modeling, language development environments for Java, C/C++ and others, testing and performance, business intelligence, rich client applications and embedded development. A large, vibrant ecosystem of major technology vendors, innovative start-ups, universities and research institutions and individuals extend, complement and support the Eclipse Platform.

The Eclipse Foundation is a not-for-profit member supported corporation that hosts the Eclipse projects. Full details of Eclipse and the Eclipse Foundation are available at www.eclipse.org.
