Canada has several medal hopefuls in the coming days and the real question is who will be the one to give Canada their first gold medal at London 2012. The debate can be broken down into two groups; the Olympic veterans who are going for another medal to add to their impressive resumes or the rising stars ready to make their mark in Canadian Olympic history for the first time. The Experienced On Day 8, Ryan Cochrane will get in the pool for swimmings longest race, the Mens 1500-metre freestyle. Cochrane is looking for the second Olympic medal of his career; he won bronze in the event at Beijing 2008 and is coming off a silver medal performance at the 2011 FINA World Championships. The 23-year-old Victoria, B.C. native will be in Lane 3 on Saturday night after posting a time of 14:49.31 Friday, the third-best time of the heats. The Canadian record holder is confident entering the race and said he expects to see himself and world record holder, Sun Yang of China, on the podium when the almost 15-minute long race ends. “The other spot is really open for anyone who makes the final… I mean I was that person in Beijing, Cochrane said. “I dont count anybody out. On Day 9, one of Canadas most well-known Olympians, Alexandre Despatie, will compete on the 3m Springboard with medal hopes on his mind. London 2012 is Despaties fourth Olympic Games. He won silver at both Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008, and finished fourth in the 10m platform at Sydney 2000. In June, it looked like his career may be in jeopardy. The 27-year-old hit his head on the diving board in training and required surgery to close a 10-centimetre wound near his hairline. However, Despatie has said he is fit to compete at London 2012. The other question mark with Despatie is whether he will perform his sports newest dive, the forward 4.5 somersault. The dive is expected to be a game-changer in London, but Despaties preparations were sidetracked with Junes injury. Day 12 should see Adam Van Koeverden in the Mens K-1 1000m Final. Van Koeverden already has an Olympic medal in this event, a bronze from Athens 2004, but will be looking to avenge an eighth place finish at Beijing 2008. The Oakville, Ont. native enters as the favourite in this event, coming in as the 2011 World champion and three-time World silver medallist. Van Koeverden would be a contender in two events at London 2012, however, the International Canoe Federation replaced the K-1 500m with the K-1 200m event. Van Koeverden won gold in the K-1 500mat Athens 2004 and silver at Beijing 2008. He voiced his displeasure for the change then put his entire effort into the 1000m. Day 12 will see another Canadian veteran go for gold; Eric Lamaze in the Equestrian Mixed Individual Jumping event. Lamaze is the defending Olympic champion in the event from Beijing 2008 and is once again a podium hopeful in his second Olympic Games. Lamaze will compete with Derly Chin de Muze after the horse he won gold with at Beijing 2008, Hickstead, died of a ruptured aorta in November 2011. Lamaze will be competing against teammate Ian Miller, who is in his 10th Olympic Games. Another Day 12 Canadian favourite is Carol Huynh, the third gold-medal shot of what could be Canadas most successful day at London 2012. Huynh enters her second Olympic Games as a defending champion, winning gold in womens freestyle 48 kilogram at Beijing 2008. Huynhs gold was Canadas first ever in womens wrestling and the first for Canada at the Beijing Games. Huynh will be trying to rebound in London after finishing off the podium in fifth place at the 2011 World Championships. She also fought off a knee injury throughout the spring. The Hazelton, B.C. native believes shes one of the quicker and more experienced athletes in the field at London 2012 and will playing on those strengths as she goes for another gold. Two-time Olympic medallist Tonya Verbeek will compete on Day 13. Having won silver at Athens 2004 and bronze at Beijing 2008, Verbeek is certainly a podium contender in the womens freestyle 55kg wrestling eventt.dddddddddddd Verbeek attempted to move up a weight class in 2010 but did not achieve the success she had hoped for. She dropped back down to the 55kg weight class, where she won silver at the 2011 World Championships. In order to win gold at these Games, Verbeek will most likely have to face her biggest rival, Japans Saori Yoshida, who beat her at Athens 2004 for gold and knocked her to the bronze medal match at Beijing 2008. After losing to Yoshida in a controversial three round match at the 2011 World Championships, Verbeek said she gained confidence knowing she pushed the greatest female wrestler ever to the limit. The Young and the Ready Day 9 features two athletes who competed at Beijing 2008 but walked away without medals, Zach Bell and Jennifer Abel. Bell finished seventh in the mens track cycling points race and 12th in the madison at Beijing 2008 but it is the omnium, a new event to London 2012, where Bell means to make his mark. The event will consist of six different track cycling races and Bell is expected on the podium when the sixth race ends. The second ever Yukon-born male athlete to represent Canada has made his name known in this event. He was the 2011 World Cup champion and won silver at the 2012 World Championships. If Bell can earn a medal at London 2012, he will be the first person from Canadas north (Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut) to do so. Abel has already won a bronze and is looking for her second medal of these Games. She competed at Beijing 2008 in the3m Springboard but finished 13th. Four years later, she is in the hunt for a medal. Abel has qualified for the semi-final at London 2012 with a preliminary round score of 344.15, putting her in fourth place - two spots ahead of her veteran teammate, Emilie Heymans. While Heymans is the better-known athlete, it may be Abel who is Canadas best shot at a medal in this event, the 20-year-old coming off her bronze medal performance at the 2011 World Championships. On Day 11, Tara Whitten will begin her race for an individual medal two days after her much-anticipated Olympic debut as a part of the womens team pursuit squad. Whitten will take part in the womens omnium, an event she won gold in at both the 2010 and 2011 World Championships. Whitten is looking to rebound at London 2012 after finishing a disappointing fourth at this years World Championships. Anything short of a medal will be an upset for the rising star, who put her PhD program on hold in 2010 to put her entire focus on the London 2012 Games. On Day 13, Canada is hoping to see middleweight (75kg) boxer Mary Spencer fighting for a gold medal. Along with womens boxing, Spencer is making her Olympic debut and is a podium favourite. Spencer was the 2010 world champion in this weight class in 2010 and a two-time world champion in the 66kg division. Spencer got into London 2012 with a wildcard berth after failing to qualify at the 2012 World Boxing Championships. Spencer was pegged for gold there but after a first-round bye, she was upset by Swedens Anna Laurall. Spencer is among the 11 wild cards in a 36 woman field of fighters. Spencer said heading into London 2012 that shes her own biggest obstacle and as long as she has the right mindset she knows she will win. Later on Day 13, another young Canadian will make her Olympic debut with medal hopes and expectations on her mind. Leah Callahan will wrestle in the Womens Freestyle 72kg weight class and may be able to surprise her opponents since she has never competed as a senior at the World Championships. Callahan won silver at the 2010 Pan American Championships and improved to win gold in at the same competition in 2011. One of Canadas final gold medal hopefuls, Catharine Pendrel, will compete on Day 16. Pendrel will race in the womens mountain bike cross-country. Pendrel competed at Beijing 2008 and finished just off the podium in fourth place. This time, Pendrel is the favourite and is coming into London 2012 on quite a roll. She won the Olympic test event and won gold at both the 2010 and 2012 World Cup and is the reigning world champion. If Canada is yet to win a gold medal by Day16, Pendrel is a very good bet to end the drought, saving the best for last. ' ' '
