CALGARY -- The Colorado Avalanche did what they needed to do Friday night against the Calgary Flames. NFL Jerseys Deals . Heading into a stretch of five days off, now all they can do is wait and hope. Semyon Varlamov made 38 saves to backstop the Avalanche to a 4-1 victory over Calgary, keeping their own slim playoff hopes alive and virtually extinguishing the Flames chances to make the post-season. "Im not one of those guys that sits at home and watches Sports Center all day. Ill leave that up to the other guys and just do my own thing, get my rest, and get my mind off hockey a little bit," said Gabriel Landeskog, who had two assists to move past New Jerseys Adam Henrique and into first place in the NHL rookie scoring race. "But it will definitely be a little nerve wracking for sure." Colorado is 10th in the Western Conference with 88 points. Theyre even in points with ninth place San Jose but have only two games left compared to the Sharks, who have four to play. Dallas and Phoenix are both at 89 points with four games each left to play. "Weve kept our hopes alive. Weve got five days off now until our next game. Were just going to have to wait and see what happens," said Colorado coach Joe Sacco, whose team is the youngest in the NHL. "Certainly our young group has played hard all year and I think we deserve to be in this position that were in down the stretch." Mark Olver, David Jones, Milan Hejduk and Peter Mueller into an empty net scored for Colorado (41-33-6), which snapped a four-game winless slide. The Avalanche wrap up the season with home games against Columbus and Nashville. Jarome Iginla on a power play with 38 seconds left in the game, scored the lone goal for Calgary (35-29-15). The Flames, who have three games remaining, fall three points behind Colorado and could be mathematically eliminated as soon as Saturday night when they play in Vancouver. Calgary is in jeopardy of missing the playoffs for a third straight season and 10th time in the past 15 years. "A lot of us in this room have been in this situation before and its a tough, tough feeling. Its going to take something pretty special now to get in," said Giordano. "For our pride as players in here, we have to get back on the ice tomorrow and show emotion and play a hard game. You cant just give up." Varlamovs best stops came in the first period, just prior to when Colorado scored its first two goals. Seconds before Olver opened the scoring, the 23-year-old stopped Curtis Glencross one-timer from the side of the net. Just prior to Jones goal that made it 2-0, Varlamov denied Mike Cammalleri from the slot. "I got so much my confidence after the team scored a couple goals. When youre leading and score first, your confidence gets better and better," Varlamov said. After a five-game winning streak in early March got the Flames into the top eight for the first time all year, they could not sustain it, going 1-4-3 in eight games since. During their late season struggles, the Flames offence has disappeared, scoring just 12 goals during that stretch -- five coming in their only win, 5-4 over Dallas. Iginlas last-minute goal snapped a shutout stretch on home ice of 139:50, which dated back to the Stars game. "In the last eight games, thats probably been the worst defensive games Ive seen this team play all year and thats why our offence has struggled," said Flames coach Brent Sutter. "You cant score seven goals in seven games when youre having 20-some goals scored against you. It doesnt work." Calgary has been plagued by inconsistency in their play all season -- the latest downward spiral began with consecutive losses to Edmonton and Columbus, the two bottom ranked teams in the league. "Its a cliche saying but its so true. A good defence is still and always will be your best offence. Thats just the way it was. The best teams have it. They defend well and they have the puck more," said Sutter. "Tonight, we were turning pucks over, giveaways in our own zone, we werent moving our feet, our battle level wasnt where we needed it to be." With Calgarys 3-0 loss to Los Angeles on Wednesday night having dashed any realistic hopes of making the playoffs, the Scotiabank Saddledome sell-out crowd of 19,289 was noticeably subdued when the game began. They grew even quieter when Flames defenceman Jay Bouwmeester accidentally swept the puck into his own net at 3:21. "You can down a couple early, at this time of year, and you saw how the game went. They blocked a lot of shots and played well defensively. I thought we generated some chances but for whatever reason, we didnt score," Giordano said. Regardless of their situation come Thursday night when they return to action, Landeskog says the Avalanche will only get better. "We have a bright future," said Landeskog. "We have a great group of guys in here, were really upbeat and positive for the next couple years, regardless of what happens this year." BOSTON -- Josh Beckett did exactly what he needed to satisfy the fired-up fans at Fenway Park. Beckett pitched his best game of the season, striking out nine and scattering four hits over seven innings as the Red Sox shut out the Seattle Mariners 5-0 on Tuesday, extending Bostons winning streak to five. Beckett hit 93 mph on the first pitch he threw and struck out leadoff batter Dustin Ackley, quickly establishing he was well past his poor start of last week. "I dont think I was trying to make a statement," Beckett said. "I dont even know that I did. Location was key for me today, I just kept the ball down." The timing couldnt have been better. Beckett lasted less than three innings in a start against Cleveland on Thursday, when he was booed off the mound after allowing seven runs on seven hits. Beckett (3-4), who was also celebrating his 32nd birthday, was still going strong through seven innings but manager Bobby Valentine pulled him before the eighth inning as a cold rain started to get heavier. Rich Hill and Alfredo Aceves pitched an inning each to complete the shutout, which capped a 5-1 homestand for the Red Sox. "You just want to keep your team in the game. The starters have been doing that lately, and its nice to keep that going," Beckett said. "Its nice. These guys have been playing their butts off all year. Its nice to be able to keep that going." Beckett also improved his status among Boston fans, who already were seething last week over news Beckett had played golf the week before after being scratched from a start because of back stiffness. They unloaded on him as he made his way to the dugout, Becketts head down the entire way. Beckett didnt give the fans a much of a chance to boo him in this outing. After he fanned Ackley, Beckett picked up two more strikeouts in the second and then struck out the side in the third with the game still scoreless. "Josh was the king of the hill today," Valentine said. "Josh has things that motivate him, and he was certainly motivated today. Hes one of our big boys. He doesnt need to follow. He can lead, and he wanted to today." David Ortiz hit his eighth homer and scored a run after putting down a surprise bunt to lead off the fifth inning. Mike Aviles hit a pair of doubles and drove in two runs for the Red Sox, who are one win shy of tying their longest winning streak of the season. The Mariners fell to 1-4 on a 10-game road trip and were shut out for the fifth time this season. Blake Beavan (1-4) weent four innings, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks. Leodis McKelvin Jersey. . A couple of defensive blunders, including a missed foul popup and blown double-play, also didnt help. "We cost ourselves a couple of runs with the defence today. No doubt," manager Eric Wedge said. "No errors, but we make a couple of plays there it saves us a couple of runs and in that type of ballgame thats a considerable difference." Ichiro Suzuki was the only Seattle player with more than one hit, singling twice. The Mariners thought they had a run in the second on Justin Smoaks high shot to the right-field corner, but first base umpire Eric Cooper called it a foul ball and the call stood after a video review. Smoak, who ended up striking out, felt he was robbed of a home run. "From my view, which is right down the line, it went right over the pole," Smoak said. "They looked at it. They dont have the camera angles here because it being an old stadium and stuff like that. So the angle they had really didnt show anything." The game remained scoreless until Ortiz led off the third with a solo shot into the Red Sox bullpen on a 3-2 pitch. Boston added two more runs in the fourth when Cody Ross walked with one out, Daniel Nava singled and Aviles hit an RBI double. Nava scored on Ryan Sweeneys groundout. Ortiz caught the Mariners -- and everybody else at Fenway Park -- off-guard when he laid a bunt down the third-base line for a leadoff single in the fifth. Seattles infield was shifted toward the right and nobody had a chance to field the ball in time. Ortiz advanced to second when Adrian Gonzalez hit a grounder and shortstop Munenori Kawasaki pulled his foot off second base before throwing out Gonzalez at first. Ortiz took third on Charlie Furbushs wild pitch to Will Middlebrooks, who followed with a line drive single. "Were going to bring some positive around here," second baseman Dustin Pedroia said. "We played good today. weve been playing good so weve just got to keep it rolling."
