Added-Time takes a look back at Week 10 of the English Premier League season to get you caught up on all the important results, stories and moments. This week saw Manchester United ascend to the top of the table thanks to Robin van Persie, West Bromwich Albion improve their position in impressive form and Liverpool rescue a point thanks to Luis Suarez. STORIES OF THE WEEK In his first game against his former Arsenal teammates, it took Manchester Uniteds Robin van Persie into the third minute of the game to do what everyone would expect from someone of his skill level. Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen attempted to clear a cross into the box but ended up teeing it up for van Persie who made no mistake firing it home to give his side an early advantage. "Its the first time Ive ever played against a former club, so its a special day," said Van Persie, who did not celebrate his opening marker. Just before halftime, United had a chance to double their lead when midfielder Santi Cazorla was called for a clear handball in the box giving the home side a penalty kick. Wayne Rooney stepped up to the spot but pulled the ball wide of the goal, keeping the score 1-0 at the half. In the second half, Rooney would atone for that mistake by finding Patrice Evra with a cross that he would convert effectively putting the game away for United. Jack Wilshire would pick up a second yellow card reducing Arsenal to 10 men and with the last kick of the game Carzola would shave the lead in half, but it would not be enough to stop United from earning the victory. Chelsea would be held to a 1-1 draw at Swansea City meaning that United moved above them to the top of the table with a one point advantage. Van Persie did cause a little more controversy with his old club when he gave his shirt to former teammate Andre Santos at halftime, drawing the ire of not only the Arsenal fan base but also Gunner head coach Arsene Wenger. "I believe that was not the right thing to do at all, said Wenger to The Sun newspaper. “I dont even understand it. Its interesting because Santos is a player who cares. Tied for the fourth in the league and sitting fifth based on goal differential is West Bromwich Albion thanks to a convincing 2-0 victory over Southampton. Peter Odemwingie was the star of the show for the Baggies as he scored once in each half. Collecting the ball just outside the box, Odemwingie fired a ball that deflected off defender Maya Yoshida and past the Southampton keeper to make the score 1-0 in the 36th minute. Shane Long would then find the Nigerian international, who would convert a diving header into his teams second goal at the hour mark to deliver the knockout punch to the Saints. "Fantastic credit to bounce back after two difficult weeks," West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster told reporters. "We were unlucky against City and we conceded in the last minute last week, against Newcastle so it was great to bounce back and we thoroughly deserved the win." In between those two markers, Rickie Lambert found the space and a clear shot for Southampton but rattled the ball off the crossbar as his team was once again kept off the score sheet as they continue to sit at the bottom of the table. Southampton has only four points from their first 10 games as they continue to struggle in their first season back in the Premier League. "We need a win thats without question," said Southampton manager Nigel Adkins. "Ive got a hunger and a desire. I love being at Southampton. The supporters have been fantastic since I joined the club. Im positive and it is my responsibility to lead from the front and I have every desire to go and do that." RESULT OF THE WEEK Pure skill turned what looked like a home defeat into a 1-1 draw for Liverpool as they came back to rescue a point against Newcastle. Two minutes before half-time, against the run of play, Newcastle jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Yohan Cabaye volleyed the ball into the net from just inside the box to give them the advantage at the break. Liverpool looked as though they werent going to find a way back into the contest when Jose Enrique fired a long ball that Luis Suarez chested down to his feet and with very little room to make a move showed great close control playing the ball around Newcastle keeper Tim Krul and slid into the open net. "His first touch from that height was an incredible piece of skill, he is a world-class striker," said Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers. His skill in the goal was so good it even drew praise from the opposing manager. "Suarez is a great player. He was causing us problems and if we could have wrapped him up, we would have won the game," said Newcastle manager Alan Pardew. Maltais, from La Baie, Que., won Canadas third gold medal of the day in the womens 1000-metre final.LONDON - The London 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony provided a rousing start to the games, but the focus quickly shifts to the pool. Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte face off Saturday in the 400-meter individual medley, a grueling race encompassing all four strokes and an appropriate next chapter in this most intriguing of rivalries. "A very rough race," said Phelps coach, Bob Bowman. "It will be a coachs dream, but also a spectators dream. It will be fantastic." Phelps wants to add to his record total of 14 gold medals and become the first male swimmer to win the same event at three straight Olympic Games. But Lochte is the defending world champion and defeated Phelps rather easily at the U.S. trials last month. Lochte is certainly not lacking for confidence. "Right after Beijing, I had a four-year plan for getting here to London," he said. "I thought I could go a lot faster. I knew I could, just because of the training Ive done. Thats why I knew this was going to be my year." There will be four finals at the Aquatics Center on Saturday. Medals also will be awarded in archery, cycling, fencing, judo, shooting and weightlifting. The cycling gold goes to the winner of the road race, where Mark Cavendish is the favourite, tasked with providing a memorable start for the host country. After days of speculation, theres an answer to the question that dominated London in the run-up to the games: Who would light the Olympic torch? Was it Roger Bannister? Steve Redgrave? David Beckham? Nope, nope and nope. Seven teenage British athletes lowered torches to trumpet-like tubes that spread into a ring of fire during one of the signature moments of director Danny Boyles $42 million show. The copper "petals" then rose skyward and came together to form the elegant cauldron. Fireworks erupted over the stadium to music from Pink Floyd. With a singalong of "Hey Jude," Beatle Paul McCartney closed a show that ran 45 minutes beyond its scheduled three hours. The other big highlight? A clever video that gave the illusion of Queen Elizabeth II parachuting into the Olympic Stadium with James Bond, aka actor Daniel Craig playing Britains most famous spy. A South Korean athlete is celebratting a London 2012 first: He recorded the first world record of the 2012 Olympic Games.dddddddddddd Im Dong-hyun, who is legally blind, broke his own record Friday in the 72-arrow mark and helped South Korea set a team record in the ranking round. "This is just the first round, so I will not get too excited by it," said Im, who has 10 per cent vision in his left eye and 20 per cent in his right. Im bettered the record he set in Turkey in May by three points with a score of 699. He also combined with Kim Bub-min and Oh Jin-hyek, smashing the record for 216 arrows with a total 2,087. That was 18 better than the mark South Korea set in May. Im has said that when he looks at the targets, he sees colours with blurred lines between them. He doesnt wear glasses in competition, saying he relies on distinguishing between the bright colours of the target. Talks are also under way to allow judoka Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani to compete after the sports governing federation said she would not be allowed to wear a headscarf. Saudi Arabia, which sent its first two female athletes to the games, had only agreed to let women participate if they adhered to the kingdoms conservative Islamic traditions, including wearing a headscarf. Nicolas Messner, a spokesman for the International Judo Federation, said there was "good collaboration" to find a solution among judo officials, the International Olympic Committee and Saudi Arabia. Messner said wearing a headscarf could be dangerous because the sport includes chokeholds and strangleholds. International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge praised the local organizing committee, saying the preparations were "excellent." "The key ingredients for successful games are good security, a good village, venues and transportation that works," he said. "If we have all that, we will have very good games. I am optimistic and confident." Rogge was asked how ready London was at this stage compared with previous host cities. "I would think in terms of readiness these games equal the readiness of Sydney and Beijing definitely," he said. "But the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Ask me again at the closing ceremony." cheap jerseys from china ' ' '
