PITTSBURGH -- The Milwaukee Brewers have wheels. On the basepaths, and in the standings, too. Ryan Braun hit two hits, drove in a run and collected three of Milwaukees seven stolen bases in a 6-0 romp over the weary Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night. "I think people have always perceived us as a team that relies on the home run," Braun said. "Well, we really dont. Were pretty good at running the bases." Then again, just about everybody is against the Pirates. Pittsburgh entered the night throwing out less than 10 per cent of attempted base stealers on the season, by far the lowest in the majors. The number only got worse as the Brewers went 7 for 7 to post their highest single game steals total since moving to the National League in 1998. "Weve got a lot of guys who can steal bases, and if you rely on the homer, you really get yourself in trouble, so you try to find a way to manufacture runs sometimes, too," Braun said. Not that streaking Yovani Gallardo (16-8) requires much in the way of run support these days. The right-hander gave up two hits over 6 2-3 innings to win his eighth straight decision. Milwaukee moved in front of fading Pittsburgh in the jumbled National League wild-card race and remained 2 1-2 games back of St. Louis for the second wild-card spot. "Yos on a roll that he goes out there and he throws up a lot of zeroes," said Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke. Carlos Gomez and Jonathan Lucroy had three hits apiece for the Brewers, who trailed the Pirates by nine games during their last visit to PNC Park but are peaking heading into the final two weeks of the season. "We just continued to believe, continued to stay positive," Braun said. "I think with the second wild card, it gives everybody hope." A.J. Burnett (15-8) gave up two runs in six innings but couldnt stop Pittsburghs late season swoon. The Pirates are 4-12 this month. "He really wrestled out there," said Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle. "He gave it everything he had." Even if it wasnt enough for Burnett to become the first Pirates pitcher to win 16 games in 20 years. He shook off trouble in the first two innings -- when he needed 51 pitches to get six outs while giving up a run -- to pitch into the sixth for his 25th straight start. Pittsburgh took the field less than 24 hours removed from a long night in Chicago, where the Pirates waited out a rain delay of more than three hours before scratching out a 3-0 victory over the Cubs. The team didnt get into Pittsburgh until 5:40 a.m., and Hurdle let his players arrive later than usual to the ballpark after the on Tuesday. The extra rest didnt help. Gallardo has thrived as the teams No. 1 starter since Zack Greinke was traded to the Los Angeles Angels and had little trouble extending his hot streak against the Pirates. The Brewers escaped a bases-loaded two-out jam in the second when Gallardo got Burnett to ground out to second. Pittsburgh didnt get another base runner until the seventh, and by then Milwaukee had raced to a 4-0 lead. The night followed a similar theme. The Brewers would get on base with a single -- all 13 of their hits were singles -- then move into scoring position by taking off for second at the first opportunity. Eventually, the greed turned into runs. During one sequence in the seventh, Weeks singled with one out then stole second and raced home on a single by Braun. The reigning NL MVP then stole second and came home on a single up the middle by Lucroy to make it 4-0. "I think they were good times to go, and we have the opportunity anytime were on second base, we get that base hit and we got a few of them," Roenicke said. "So it was a good game." Pittsburgh briefly had a chance to get back in it in the bottom of the inning, using a single, an error and a walk to load the bases. Gallardo gave way to reliever Jonathan Henderson, who got pinch-hitter Mike McKenry to pop to shallow right field. Milwaukee tacked on two more runs in the eighth, sparked by a single and stolen base by Gomez. It was the seventh of the night for the Brewers, the most since the club joined the NL and the second most in team history. The team record for stolen bases in a single game is eight set against the Toronto Blue Jays on Aug. 28, 1992. Hurdle had no issue with the liberties the Brewers took on the base paths. "If you dont likeem stealing bases," Hurdle said, "getem out." CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Brandon Phillips felt Cincinnatis fans were a bit premature in their booing, so he took it upon himself to turn the jeers into cheers. The second baseman homered and had a season-high five RBIs, then scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning on Todd Fraziers single to help the Reds rally from a six-run deficit in a 7-6 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday. "If youre going to boo, wait until the games over," said Phillips, who Cincinnati to its first win after trailing by as many as six runs since wiping out a 6-0 deficit to beat Washington 8-7 on May 21, 2007. "We feed off the fans." Arizona led 6-3 with one out in the seventh when reliever Bryan Shaw (1-4) walked pinch-hitter Xavier Paul and leadoff batter Drew Stubbs. Wilson Valdezs grounder skipped under the glove of first baseman Paul Goldschmidt for a run-scoring error, setting up Phillips tying two-run double to left-centre field. Phillips moved to third on Jay Bruces groundout to Goldschmidt against reliever Mike Zagurski and scored on Fraziers single to left off Brad Ziegler. "That was pretty fun, especially after the beginning," Frazier said. "We were a little dead. Brandon got us going." Alfredo Simon (2-1) allowed one hit in 1 2-3 innings for the win. Logan Ondrusek and Sean Marshall combined to pitch a scoreless eighth and Aroldis Chapman pitched the ninth for his 15th save as the Reds salvaged a split of the four-game series and moved a half-game ahead of idle Pittsburgh in the NL Central. The Reds improved to 2-2 in their first four games without All-Star first baseman Joey Votto, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. They also have 22 come-from-behind wins. "The Reds are a very resilient team," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said. Phillips, who usually bats fourth, finally got going in Vottos normal No. 3 spot. He was a combined 3-for-11 with one RBI in the first three games since manager Dusty Baker moved him up a notch. "Brandon can hit all over the order," Baker said. "Hes the only guy weve got who can do that. This lets you know you can come back. It shows us what we can do without Joey. Youvee just got to keep doing what you can do.dddddddddddd." The Diamondbacks scored in the first inning for the third time in the four-game series. Willie Bloomquist led off the game with a single to right field, stole second as Aaron Hill was striking out and scored on Goldschmidts two-out single to centre. They made it 2-0 in the third on Bloomquists leadoff double to right field and Hills RBI single to right that extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Hill added his 13th homer of the season, a 395-foot solo shot into the left field seats, with one out in the fifth. The Diamondbacks added three in the sixth, including Henry Blancos two-run homer, his first since Sept. 28 against the Dodgers. Stubbs and Valdez led off the sixth with singles before Phillips crushed a 1-1 pitch 428 feet into the second deck in left field for his 11th homer of the season. Arizona starter Joe Saunders allowed one hit in five innings before wilting in the sixth. The left-hander allowed four hits and three runs with three walks and five strikeouts in six innings. "I ran into a little trouble in the sixth -- a couple of soft hits," Saunders said. "I made a good pitch to Phillips. I dont know how he kept it fair. Maybe he was cheating in a little bit. Youve just got to tip your cap and move on. Its a shame we couldnt close it out and win the series." Cincinnati starter Mike Leake tied his career high by allowing 11 hits and his season high with six runs before being lifted with one out in the sixth inning. Leake finished with two strikeouts and a walk. NOTES: Reds All-Star OF Jay Bruce went 0 for 4 to extend his hitless streak to 18 at bats. ...
